Memorial Day events

The following events have been scheduled in observance of Memorial Day:
VFW Post 8713 and Ladies Auxiliary will have a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at the post home, 1686 E Jefferson St., Brooksville. Call 796-4449.
Florida National Cemetery will host the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday. The cemetery is at 6502 SW 102nd Ave. (Exit 309 off Interstate 75). The speaker will be Rear Adm. Leroy Collins Jr., executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. The ceremony will also include the Avenue of Flags, which includes a display of more than 400 flags along the cemetery roadways, the South Sumter High School Band and singers Linda Burnette, Sheriff Bill Farmer and Laura Riley. Buglers Garfield Jones and Gayle Williams will perform taps, the Florida National Guard will provide a gun salute and Ye Mystic Aircrew will conduct a flyover. VFW Post 10209 and Florida Hills Cemetery will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the cemetery, 14354 Spring Hill Drive. The keynote speaker will be retired two-star Air Force Maj. Gen. M.P. Smith. There will be a parade of colors, speakers, a gun salute with firing detail from Post 10209 and the playing of taps. Flags will be at the headstones of veterans at the cemetery.
