They learned their chops in practice rooms and youth symphonies. Now high school is behind them, and they'll soon pack up their instruments for college. St. Petersburg Times photographer Ted McLaren invited recent high school grads to talk about their plans and what music means to them.

Steven DeBoer, 18, clarinet Graduated from Chamberlain High School in Tampa; will attend the University of Miami, where he hopes to play in the symphony. Plays with the Patel Conservatory Youth Symphony in Tampa.
