Times Player of the Year: Riverview's Michelle Trugillo
By Bryan Burns, Times Correspondent
Published May 27, 2007
Trugillo is the choice because, quite simply, the Riverview senior was the best player on the on the county's most dominating team. A dual-threat quarterback with an uncanny knack for making plays, Trugillo led a Riverview attack that averaged 35 points a game. As a starting middle linebacker on defense, Trugillo had seven interceptions and five defensive touchdowns for a Sharks' unit that gave up just six points a game during the regular season.
Most impressive accomplishment
Trugillo says it's her 66-yard touchdown run in a 33-7, quarterfinal win over Lakewood, the longest run from scrimmage in FHSAA Finals history. But we think it's the total amount of offense Trugillo piled up - in 14 games, she passed for 2, 010 yards and rushed for 961 more with an astounding 56 touchdowns (33 passing).
College plans
Nothing definite yet, but Trugillo would like to walk on somewhere and join the volleyball or track team.
Did you know?
Trugillo is a two-time AAU state champion in the javelin and was a state qualifier in the discus. She couldn't attend the meet, however, because it was the same day as the Sharks' flag football semifinal against Fort Lauderdale Dillard.
Quote
"I feel like with her back there, we can win any game, " Riverview coach Jo Jennings said before the win over Lakewood.
