A long weekend of traffic and tribute
By TIMES STAFF

Residents turned out around the Tampa Bay area Sunday to pay solemn tribute to those who died in service to their nation.
Around 300 people gathered in Tampa's Veterans Memorial Museum & Park for the Veterans' Council of Hillsborough County's 11th Annual Memorial Day of Remembrance. Of those, many were children, eager to commemorate the sacrifices of former and current service personnel.
But the Memorial Day weekend also finds thousands of drivers heading to the parks and beaches, resulting in the predictable number of frustrating traffic jams. Some area police dispatch centers reported an increased number of calls.
The big weekend continues today, and with the usual warnings about safe driving came a reminder about the danger of fireworks during this continuing tinderbox drought. Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles H. Bronson urged residents to be careful during all outdoor activities this holiday weekend.
Expect partly sunny skies today with a high of about 90 and no chance of showers.
