South Florida leads in boating accidents

South Florida's waterways are the most dangerous in the state.

The 52-mile stretch of coastal waterways from central Palm Beach County through Broward to northern Miami-Dade County had the most boating accidents per square mile in Florida between 2002 and 2006, according to a South Florida Sun-Sentinel analysis.

There were nearly 600 accidents in South Florida during that time; one in four resulted in injury, according to statistics compiled by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Twenty-one people died.

Statistics show Memorial Day weekend was the second-most accident-prone time of the year, just behind the Fourth of July weekend.
