Demoted Gomes makes a loud exit

Although he knew it could be coming, Rays outfielder Jonny Gomes wasn't happy being demoted to Triple A on Monday when Akinori Iwamura was activated from the disabled list.

ST. PETERSBURG - Though OF Jonny Gomes knew it was a possibility he'd be sent down Monday, he didn't take the news well.
And he didn't go quietly.
Gomes responded by spending about 15 minutes telling manager Joe Maddon, and coaches Tom Foley and Steve Henderson, specifically - and loudly - why he disagreed with the move. The conversation got so heated that even with Maddon's door closed players could hear it in the clubhouse, which was closed to the media at the time.
"If it was a debate championship I definitely won," Gomes said later.
To make room to activate 3B Akinori Iwamura, the Rays had to demote either Gomes or INF Jorge Cantu to Triple-A Durham. Though Gomes made the opening day roster and Cantu didn't, and though the Rays arguably could use another outfielder more than an infielder, Gomes was optioned out.
Gomes played in just 19 of the first 48 games, with only 49 at-bats and a .184 average. Essentially, Maddon told Gomes they wanted him to go down so he could play more often, and that it would benefit him and the team, so that he'd be ready when needed. Gomes countered that the Rays could arrange it so he could play more in the majors.
"I just thought there were at-bats for me here," Gomes said. "There's at-bats for me in Triple A as well but I thought there were at-bats for me here, so that was our disagreement."
Maddon said he had no problem with the presentation of Gomes' dissent, just the premise.
"I loved it," Maddon said. "He was just letting off some steam, which he has every right to do, and he did it in a respectful way, which I was good with. I just told him it wasn't true, that the at-bats aren't here right now."
After leaving the office, Gomes punctuated his argument by throwing the fan mail that was stacked in his box. But after calming down, he went back in to see Maddon, shook hands and left on good terms, saying he looked forward to returning.
Gomes will leave today for Durham and get right to work. "I'm the type of guy who's going to be real bitter outside the lines," he said, "but once I get back inside the lines it's game time."
HE'S BACK: The Rays were eager to get Iwamura back, and he showed why, making a spectacular defensive play early; going 2-for-3, including a key single in the ninth-inning rally; and scoring the winning run. In the nine games the Rays have won with Iwamura, he has scored the tying or winning runs seven times.
"I'm very glad to be back on the field and to be productive and to be involved in a couple of key plays," Iwamura said through interpreter Masa Koyanagi.
KNOCKDOWN THROW: RHP Edwin Jackson was laboring through another start when, while backing up home in the second, he lost LF Carl Crawford's throw in the lights and was struck in the face by the ball and knocked to the ground. From that point on, he allowed only one more run and struck out a career-high-matching nine.
"Something just clicked," said Jackson, whose face was swollen. "I feel like I just came out of a boxing ring. But we got a win so it kind of kills some of that pain."
DIFFERENT VIEW: Third-base umpire Jim Wolf didn't think there was interference on a second-inning foul popup, but Tropicana Field security did, escorting out the fan who reached over and caught the ball before Iwamura could.
ON THE OUTS: With Gomes gone, the Rays will operate with essentially 3 1/2 outfielders: Crawford, Elijah Dukes and Delmon Young will start and B.J. Upton, the starting second baseman, will be the backup.
MISCELLANY: Though Maddon still hasn't said RHP Jae Seo is permanently out of the rotation, he hasn't said that he's back in, either, saying Scott Kazmir will start Friday and Jackson "most likely" on Saturday. ... Though Cantu survived, he won't play much with Ty Wigginton starting at first against lefthanders.

It tells you how bad this club is when a guy hitting .184, striking out 33% career believes he should be in the big leagues. Very classy screaming at your skipper; does he scream when you flail at 0-2 sliders a foot outside?

Try shortening your swing and cutting down on your strikeouts. See you at the food court. I'll be at my usual post, chillin on the scooter and trying to pull. Gush!

Ok Jonny, the gloves are off and it's time to play hardball. It's Fourth and 15 and you're looking at a full court press. Get your swing together and earn your way back to the field. But it's not too late to fill out those organ donor cards.

I don't know a lot about baseball, but his swing did seem very long and he struck out a lot. He was a liability in the field and didn't even win the DH job. It may stink more than me after volleyball practice and Billy's steering wheel, but its right

Come on Jonny, put the h in your name, go down to Triple A, handle your business, and you will earn your way back up. Your swing has more holes than an orgy right now, straighten it out and we will see ya in a few years.

I don't know, it seems like there are just many players more deserving of playing time at DH, like Pena, Wiggington, Norton, or Dukes when Baldelli gets back. I'm not saying he stinks like Danielle after volleyball practice, just shouldnt be starting

Gomes is a great Devil Ray and a true fan favorite. The fans still loved him even when he was struggling. I'm glad he's getting sent down so he can start hitting the ball well again, come back strong, and be a DRay for years to come!

Uh, no. Should Gomes be playing over Crawford, Elijah Kemp, Young, Akimori, Pena, Wiggington, Upton, or Norton? Set up to fail, bro I have no idea what you are talking about. He isn't even our 5th best D.H. He stinks like Danielle after volleyball.

If Gomes' deal is half as long as his swing, he should challenge Shaq to a chub off. Shorten up and hit just one ball to RF. Bill, Tom, Andy- i hope he gives you a courtesy tap.

If I was the fan they threw out I would be raising all holy heck. How could you throw him out when the umpire ruled no fan interference?

Gomes struggled because your manager set him up to do so. Those of you that have paid attention know what I'm talking about. Maddon has somethin against the guy and continues to play favorites. As long as Maddon stays Rays are celler dwellers.

I made a loud exit myself in the far stall on the 9th floor, but didnt take it out on anyone, unless you count the janitor. Anyways, unless they have Walt Reniack as their AAA hitting coach, Gomes shouldnt see the majors again anytime soon

Jonny is a class act...always has been. Who can blame him for expressing his frustration? He'll be back after getting his AB's in Durham and tearing up the IL! Shades of 2005 & pre-injury 2006.....go Jonny! True Rays fans support you.

Glad to hear Jonny threw away the fan mail because he was mad, classy move to throw away a picture from a 10 year old. Look in a mirror Jonny, you are hitting 40 pts. less than your weight & are a liability in the outfield!! Welcome back to Durham!

Not that there's much out there right now, but the Rays are going to have to consider trading some of this position player depth for a relief pitcher.

I understand that Gomes has struggled this year, but Cantu? Ship him out of there and bring Johnny back. If for no other reason that levity.

I wonder if Bozo JOo would have "loved it" if Jonny had punched him in the nose. I wish he had, it's the DRO, there would have been no repercussions. Maybe Jonny will get Anger Management class. FIRE MADDON NOW!!!!

Gomes has no place to play on the Rays. He has problems hitting and he is fair in the outfield. Go to Durham and play then see how you do with some games under your belt. I dont expect to see him soon.
