'Round the County in 30 Days
A team-by-team look at Hillsborough County spring football:
Bloomingdale
Coach: Corey Brinson (fifth season, 12-27)
2006 record: 1-9
District opponents: Brandon, East Bay, Newsome, Plant City
Jamboree result: Lost to Brandon 13-0
Who's gone: DE Dayne Diemer, DT Joe-Barry Gardner, OL Shane Lanteigh, OL Andrew Wright
Who's back: LB Chris Curran, QB Shane Geyer, RB/DB Jahmaal Jones, DB Justin Mann
What's new: The offense - and the offensive coordinator. Under Brian Surcy, the Bulls ditched the triple option for the spread, which coaches hope will allow Bloomingdale to keep its best athletes on the field longer. It's still a work in progress, but Brinson said he saw improvement in spring practice and is optimistic. Geyer, a 5-foot-10, 190-pounder, is the triggerman. Jones (5-10, 195) is a powerful runner who catches the ball well, too. On defense, watch for defensive end D'Marcus Reid. Age, not ability, is Bloomingdale's greatest concern. The Bulls will have just seven seniors and started six ninth-graders in their jamboree. Depth is another issue.
Audibles: "Our biggest upside is youth. The guys we've got in there can really get us going in the right direction with a little bit of time and a little bit of work." Brinson
Did you know?: A Bloom-ingdale graduate, Surcy played running back at USF.
Schedule: Aug. 24: at Riverview (kickoff classic); Aug. 31: at Tampa Bay Tech; Sept. 7: at Spoto; Sept. 14: King; Sept. 21: at Plant City; Sept. 28: Sickles; Oct. 5: open; Oct. 12: at Leto; Oct. 18: at East Bay; Oct. 26: Brandon; Nov. 2: Newsome; Nov. 9: Durant
