For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Coach: Tom McHugh
Last year: Pasco finished 3-7, resulting in the dismissal of coach Dale Caparaso, now defensive coordinator at Brandon.
District: Class 3A-8 (Gulf, Hudson, Sunlake, Wiregrass Ranch, Zephyrhills)
Did you know?: Projected starting quarterback Josh Johnson - McHugh was clear no one is guaranteed a roster spot - was part of three touchdowns in the Pirates' annual Red and Black scrimmage. Johnson missed more than a week of spring practice while playing postseason baseball, but McHugh said Johnson came out eager to perform and asked to play defensive back and return kicks. "I'm probably going to have to get handcuffs and take him off the field because he wants to do everything, " McHugh said. "He did very well, but I'm not ready to hand anything over to anyone."
Breakout player: McHugh wanted to credit a few players, beginning with Johnson. Then fullback Jorge Jaramillo, fullback Zack Faza, lineman Japhus Pope, guard Trevor Lane, Chris Burgos and Eric Stroud.
Who's back: High-flying speedster Demetrious Larry could be Johnson's top target. At 6 feet 3, Larry is rated No. 65 by Rivals.com in its preseason ranking of the top 100 players in Florida. The only other Pasco County player on that list is Ridgewood running back Byronell Arline (No. 89).
Spring revelation: The desire to recapture Pirate Pride caught McHugh off guard. He said he was happy to see players hungry to restore Pasco's swagger, which has been noticeably absent for two seasons. So far, so good.
