Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End hauled in $142.1-million to commandeer the record for best Memorial Day weekend debut, capping a huge month that puts Hollywood on track for record summer business. Disney's third Pirates adventure fell far short of breaking the best three-day opening ever, the $151.1-million haul for Spider-Man 3 three weeks earlier, according to studio estimates reported by the Associated Press on Monday. Yet At World's End cruised past last year's record for best four-day Memorial Day opening, $122.9-million for X-Men: The Last Stand.
Father knows best?
Lindsay Lohan's father Michael Lohan says his out-of-control daughter and his ex-wife should both book rooms in rehab, and soon.
The Lohan patriarch told the New York Post, "The writing was on the wall years ago, and when Lindsay was in (the Los Angeles treatment clinic) Wonderland . . . give me a break. What kind of rehab facility lets people leave the grounds? They wanted the name Lindsay Lohan to stay there, they didn't want to help her. She needs a faith-based program."
Lohan hasn't had the best of relationships with either Lindsay or his ex, Dina. For one thing, he went to jail in 2005 on DUI and assault charges. But he's speaking up now because Lindsay was arrested over the weekend in Beverly Hills on suspicion of DUI after her convertible struck a curb, and police said they found what they believe is cocaine at the scene. Lohan was treated for minor injuries. Two others in the car weren't hurt. Police said Lohan could face more charges, including felonies.
No rosy ending
If you thought Rosie O'Donnell's early exit from ABC's The View would end all the Rosie-centric sniping, you're wrong. And no surprise there.
O'Donnell, who asked to be released from her contract last week after an on-air fight with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, now says she won't ever talk to Hasselbeck again. O'Donnell wrote on her Web site that Hasselbeck tried to contact her, but "I haven't spoken to her, and I probably won't, and I think it's just as well."
Their latest fight came Wednesday, over the Iraq war. It escalated to a shouting match and ultimately they called each other "cowardly" before ABC went to commercial.
Barbra Streisand canceled her concert in Rome next month after protests by Italian consumer groups angered by what they said were excessively high ticket prices, the Associated Press reported.
Concert organizers indicated the decision was not connected to the outcry, saying production delays had forced them to scrap the June 15 concert in the capital's Stadio Flaminio. The event would've been the singer's first in Italy and the start of her European tour.
"We deeply apologize to the fans in Rome, " tour promoter Michael Cohl said. Of course, he followed that up by encouraging fans to book a spot for one of Streisand's other European concerts.
Mischa Barton, onetime troubled teen of The O.C., was hospitalized Sunday after suffering a bad reaction to medication, according to celebrity news Web site TMZ.com. People reported that Barton was with her family and feeling much better. According to TMZ, Barton, 21, was at a friend's barbecue when she began feeling ill. She was sick with bronchitis after traveling to Cannes, London and Paris the past several weeks, the Web site said.
