TAMPA - A motorcyclist trying to thwart a bicycle theft Monday collided with the fleeing man, seriously injuring him, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The man on the bicycle, who had not been identified Monday evening, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.
Deputies said the driver of the motorcycle was Richard H. Shadions Jr., 55, of Lutz. Carter described the incident as an aggravated battery. Neither Shadions nor the bicyclist was charged immediately.
Deputies said Claudio Luna, the bicycle's owner, was inside the Metro PCS cell phone store at Livingston and Bearss avenues about noon when he saw a man stealing his bike.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said that Shadions saw Luna chasing the thief, yelling at him to stop.
Shadions pulled up next to the bike and reached for the man but missed, Carter said.
In the driveway of a nearby apartment complex, Shadions tried a second time, but swerved into the bicycle. Shadions wasn't injured.
