Shorecrest: Pinellas progress reports

Published May 29, 2007

Coach: Phil Hayford (29th season)

2006 record: 6-4

Key losses: RB Clay Burke, FB Broghan Carnes, LB Nick Maliska, QB Page Harris, DB Paul Gallant, DB/WR/K Josh Birkbeck

Key returners: RB Jack Schroeder, QB Hunter Tremaine, OL/DL Zach Hirsch, LB Daniel Whitecage

Spring skinny: Shorecrest revealed a new look in its scrimmage, running shotgun sets with three backs and heavy doses of misdirection. Hayford said he might have the "littlest team, " but Shorecrest might surprise opponents with speed. Tremaine, who will be a sophomore, is a dual threat under center. But with slashers such as Schroeder to hand off to, he'll be far from on his own. The defense, led by Hirsch, appears steady, holding Cambridge to one offensive score.

Gamebreaker: Tremaine. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder did it all against Cambridge, amassing 158 rushing yards and three TDs and showing an ability to open it up with passes.

Key questions: How will Shore-crest's line hold up? Hayford said he "may have maybe four guys over 200 pounds." Can the smaller line spark big results for the run-happy Chargers? With Shorecrest returning just five seniors, who will fill the leadership void?
