Lions Club gives $1, 000 to 3 students

Three students received the St. Petersburg Lions Club Paul Heistand Memorial Scholarship:

- Nathan Towson, Admiral Farragut Academy.

- Amanda J. Barnes, St. Petersburg High School.

- Kaitlin V. Benchimol, Shorecrest Preparatory School.

Each received $1, 000. The scholarships are based on community service, leadership and academic accomplishment. Selection was made by school staff members. Each of these St. Petersburg high schools also have a LEO Club, sponsored by the St. Petersburg Lions Club. The scholarship honors Paul Heistand, past president and longtime club secretary who was active in community service for many years in St. Petersburg.

DAR chapter awards two scholarships

The Princess Hirrihigua Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winners of scholarships, awarded for academic achievement and community service. Recipients are Derek Paul Nieber of St. Petersburg, a 2007 graduate of Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, and Lauren Alyse Johnston of Palm Harbor, a 2007 graduate of Tarpon Springs High School.

Rotary Club announces Youth Award winners

The St. Petersburg Rotary Club has announced the winners of this year's Youth Awards. Students are selected based on scholarship, character and service. Each year, one boy and one girl are named by the principal and the selection committee from each participating school. The following students received a certificate and $50 Savings Bond.

Admiral Farragut Academy: Jonathan Gardner and Margaret Gates-George.

Boca Ciega High: Chelsea Odoms and John Henry "J.T." Thee.

Canterbury School of Florida: Madison Kebler and Matthew Ritch.

Dixie Hollins High: Sheri Haker and Krithong Panmunin.

Gibbs High: Pariseia Collins and Keith Huntington.

Lakewood High: Kallanise Byrd and Edward Nixon.

Northeast High: Stashanie Phillips and Russell Snyder.

Northside Christian High: Sean McAlpin and Robin Watson.

Shorecrest Preparatory: Kaitlin Benchimol and Nicholas Maliska.

St. Petersburg Catholic High: Stephanie Giparas and Kevin Nelson.

St. Petersburg High: Sarah Greenberg and Taylor Hoel.
