  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

SHE STOLE HIS HEART

MAN NEARLY FINDS TRUE LOVE AT U-HAUL STORE

He thought she was cute. "Hey baby, you're pretty fine, " he said. She was nervous. He asked for her phone number, suggesting maybe they could go out sometime. She declined. Then he left, because, well, he needed to get out of there. Who knows when the cops were going to show up. Oh, wait, key points unmentioned until now: She was a clerk at a Milwaukee U-Haul store, and he was robbing it. He got the cash, but not the phone number.

MEDICAL MIRACLE

Headaches may be caused by bullet

Jin Guangying, 77, of Jiangsu province, China, went to the doctor to find the cause of her headaches. They found an inch long bullet in her skull. It was rusty, because it had been there 64 years. Seems she got shot in 1943 while delivering food to her father, who was a guerrilla fighting Japanese troops. Her mother took care of her, and the bullet went undetected until the recent doctor's visit. "I don't really know how to explain her survival with that bullet in her head for such a long time, " said Zhou Hong, the head of surgery at Renci Hospital. "I would have to say this is pure good luck."

PAIR OF PERVS

Man had a serious nose for footwear

Police arrested a man from Kenosha, Wis., on charges that he broke into Waukesha's North High School and stole shoes from female students. More than 1, 500 pairs of shoes. The man has been convicted of doing the same thing at schools previously. The police have not released his name because he has not been formally charged yet, but they know his motive. "He liked to smell them, " said Lt. William H. Graham.

Underwear victims may get goods back

If you are a woman, and lost any underwear recently in a laundry room near Colorado State University, the police there may have good news for you. They have recovered about 1, 300 unmentionables worth about $6, 000, or so a leading appraiser of used underwear says. At this point, you can't get the items back, because the case is still open against suspect Chih Hsien Wu, 43. But once the case is closed, victims can reclaim their belongings. If they really, actually, want them.

DEPT. OF DUH

Study: If you drink, you may not think

Sit down for this one: A study at the University of Missouri-Columbia has determined a link in young adults between frequent binge drinking and poor decisionmaking. (Gasp!) It is unclear whether the people who made the decision to fund such a study were binge-drinking young adults. The study wasn't able to determine which came first, though: a bad approach to decisionmaking or the tendency to drink heavily.
