Chamberlain softball coach Bob Diez, who led the Chiefs to the Class 5A state tournament this month, was named the state's coach of the year for his classification.

The award, sponsored by the Florida Dairy Farmers, was voted on by a statewide panel of coaches and media representatives. Diez is a finalist for overall coach of the year following a final round of balloting.

Despite missing two prominent players - suspended while the state looked into recruiting allegations - for six weeks, Diez's club finished 28-3 and won the 12th district title of his 16-year tenure. Chamberlain's season ended with a 5-0 loss to Pace in the 5A semifinals.
