On the funny side of the street
Published May 31, 2007
When you think of Neil Simon, you usually think of one-liners layered over a story of tangled relationships - The Odd Couple, Sunshine Boys, Brighton Beach Memoirs, to name a few.
Rumors is different, a knee-slapping farce, opening Friday at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre for a six-week run.
"There's no hidden message or social significance, " said Todd Eskin, director and production stage manager. "Just two hours of side-splitting comedy."
Rumors is set in the swanky New York apartment of Deputy Mayor Charley Brock and his wealthy wife, Myra. The Brocks have invited four couples over to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, including gossipy sophisticates Chris and Ken Gorman, who arrive to an apparently empty house.
Ken finds Charley upstairs, covered in blood, the result of a gunshot through his earlobe. It's not life-threatening, but it is career-threatening, especially since Charley is incoherent and Myra is missing.
As the other guests arrive, Ken and Chris improvise a cover story, which gets more complicated as the evening progresses and others arrive: Charley's accountant Lenny Ganz and his wife, Claire; Charley's analyst, Ernie Cusack and his wife, Cookie; and ambitious young politician Glenn Cooper and his pouty wife, Cassie .
When the cops show up, the guests' stories get wilder and more contradictory, as everyone tries to protect the deputy mayor.
Rumors runs Friday through July 8 at Show Palace Dinner Theatre, 16128 U.S. 19, Hudson. Dinner and show, $42.50; show only, $31.45, plus tax and tip. Children's prices available. (727) 863-7949 in west Pasco; toll free elsewhere 1-888-655-7469.
