A concert of Cuba
By JOHN FLEMING
Published May 31, 2007
For Cuban music fans, there's a fascinating event this weekend, as singer Xiomara Alfaro gives a concert at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Long before the Buena Vista Social Club, Alfaro was part of the generation that made Cuba one of the world's richest musical cultures, including such great singers as Olga Guillot and Celia Cruz and bandleader Benny More. Alfaro was one of the island's biggest stars in the 1950s with hits like Siboney, Luna Rossa and Drume Negrita. She now lives in Atlanta. Alfaro will perform with bass, percussion and piano at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ferguson Hall. $25.50, $29.50. (813) 229-7827 or toll-free 1-800-955-1045; www.tbpac.org.
