Maybe the Knesset can fix our tax mess
By HOWARD TROXLER
Published May 31, 2007
You love Charlie. Admit it. I love him, too. We all love Charlie.
But with that out of the way, what's the governor of Florida doing in Israel?
Gov. Charlie Crist is in the Mideast this week for a five-day trip. Trade mission, you know. Goodwill.
He's meeting with top government and business officials. He's touring the Israeli parliament, the Knesset. He's getting a top-level briefing on military security.
He put a note in the Wailing Wall, asking God to look out for Florida. He's going to Jordan, too, to meet the king.
No offense to these nations, but ...
The guy has been governor for just shy of five months, and he's knocking around the Middle East? Who is he, Charlie of Arabia?
Don't you think he might at least have gotten this property tax thing fixed first? After all, the Legislature is getting ready for a special session.
The governor also is smack in the middle of one of his most important jobs, deciding whether to veto or approve hundreds of bills.
There's still that hurricane insurance thing, too -- not quite fixed, shall we say. Friday is, after all, the official start of the hurricane season.
So the timing does not seem the best, at least not in the "actually governing the state" department.
On the other hand, the timing is quite good for the "raising the governor's profile" department.
A charming, attractive, popular, moderate Republican governor of a big-deal state in the Electoral College - he's not the last guy on the list to be somebody's running mate.
Neither am I the first to point out that there's nothing like a trip to Israel to help your standing among Jewish voters. (Unless he accidentally sets off a diplomatic crisis or something, like proposing a "Save Our Homes" amendment for the West Bank.)
Also, don't forget that Crist just signed a law that allows him to run for federal office without resigning. Heck, he could run for vice president in his spare time in 2008.
I asked on Wednesday how much this trip was costing and who was paying for it. Enterprise Florida, the outfit coordinating the 30-member trip, said its total costs were $100,000 to $110,000, which actually sounds like a pretty good deal.
Some of the politicians on the trip are paying out of their own branch of the government's funds and need to be totaled up separately. Some of the business folks are paying their costs. As for Enterprise Florida, about 80 percent of its money comes from tax dollars and 20 percent from corporations.
The governor's folks also sent me a fact sheet with much interesting information, including the facts that bilateral trade between Florida and Israel was worth $229-million in 2006, and that more than 40 Israeli companies operate in Florida.
So I'm even willing to admit that it's more than a junket. But with everything else on Florida's plate for the foreseeable future, it would be just as well for the governor to govern more and gallivant less.

Re: Mike's comment about losing our homes. In many cases (short of illness) those that lose their homes have used bad financial judgement. Isn't time we took responsibility for our own actions and stopped blaming everyone else?

What do you expect from Howard & the St. Pete Times. Those working for the Times obviously got their journalism degree by mail!

Over $300M of taxpayer money is in Scripps and Torrey Pines. The idea (Jeb's only good one)is to attract more biomed and drug companies to diversify and enhance Florida's economy. Israel has many world class drug and research companies we can welcome

Wexler and Crist are big buddies now that Crist has finalized the switch from touch screen to optical scanner voting....another big expense and a step backward in technology. Looks like Wexler has promised Crist the Jewish vote, at our expense.

No question that the Times has a distinct left wing bias and often displays terrible tactics and very poor journalism. Having said that, there is some truth to Troxlers's comments. On the other side more trade will be better for both sides.

This is B.S. As a local government employee I face the possibility of losing my job as a result of tax reform, and the guy promising all these cuts is spending tax dollars to go sightseeing. Folks, please look at state officials spending as well.

Gov. Crist needs to get his behind back to Florida and fix this property tax mess. Stop pandering for votes and make sure Floridians get substantial relief soon or you'll be able to go to Israel for a permanent vacation!! What an idiot.

To any candidate considering Charlie as a running mate - choose him, lose me. And if Charlie loses his bid for vp and tries to run again for gov. I will diligently work for his opponent. Solve our problems first Charlie, then pad your resume.

Gov't "for the people and by the people"? Yeah, right! Try "Gov't for the Gov't and by the Gov't". I call for a Tampa Tea Party!

Amazing. What has Israel got to do with the hurricane season (oh, yeah, prayers and stuff) taxes, (we pay for the trip) and insurance, crime, education, you know Florida stuff!? Talk about a HUGE CRIST BLUNDER!

Why Israel? Peaceful Place except for the occasional rocket attack. Economic Impact? Yes they get a ton of foreign Aide. A far better place would have been Iraq and Afghanistan where our Florida Guardsmen are stationed and they are voters too.

For some reason, his Jewish friends that put the Bilirakis father on the map and got introduced to Bush-the Semblers, have Crist thinking they run the money for the Republican party...
I guess the Sembler's can sell anything-

I agree that it would be a little premature to be feeling out his presidential appeal. Let's get a list of accomplishments going as Governor first please. I am OK with the trip though. No big deal.

Oh my God people, he's the governor, not a miracle worker. I hope you operate your business with the same high expectations. He probably needs a hiatus before the upcoming hurricane season. Troxler is just doing his job asking questions. Get over it.

Maybe he wants to change his faith and investigate it first hand. Being Jewish may make him a happier person. Or it just may be a free vacation for him and his girl/guy. All legal.

Crist hasn't delivered on reigning in the insurance companies, and the property tax reform looks to be going nowhere. How about doing some real journalism and finding just how much this man and his entourage are costing us tax payers on these trips?

Trip to Isreal is his first trip to test his national appeal. He intends to run for President and needs to be seen as a potential player as VP. Thus Florida's new primary date, and his new found international experience. Crist has a me agenda.
