BROOKSVILLE - In the past calendar year, Hernando has had head coaching openings in football, boys basketball, girls basketball, wrestling, boys soccer, girls soccer, girls tennis, boys tennis and baseball.
Now the man doing all the hiring is leaving. Athletic director Brent Gaustad is taking an assistant principal's job at Springstead, bringing to end his two-year reign.
Gaustad, 44, has spent much of the past two decades at Hernando High, starting as an assistant football coach in 1988. He was at South Sumter as an assistant football coach from 1998-2003, but returned to Hernando to take charge of the school's discipline program. Since 1988 he has coached baseball, softball, football, soccer and weightlifting.
Gaustad said he will help principal Betty Harper select a new athletic director. The deadline for out-of-town candidates to apply is Monday. The school has begun interviewing in-house candidates and hopes to have a new athletic director by June 8.
"I think they are in a pretty good situation, " said Gaustad, who won't have any athletic responsibilities at Springstead. "Everything seems to be going in the right direction.
