'Round the County in 30 Days

Berkeley Prep

Published May 31, 2007

Coach: Dominic Ciao (first season at Berkeley; 17 seasons at Jesuit, 132-60)

2006 record: 1-8

Class 2B, District 6 opponents: Cardinal Mooney, Clearwater Central Catholic, Frostproof

Who's gone: OL Colin Boss

Who's back: QB Archie Barnes, LB/FB Alex Matzkin

What's new: Ciao, one of the most respected coaches to ever walk a sideline in Hillsborough County, is back after a five-year hiatus from head coaching. Ciao left Jesuit in 2003 to deal with family issues, but said he is completely rejuvenated and could not be more excited with the future at Berkeley. In the 13 days of spring practice, Ciao switched Barnes from wide receiver to quarterback and experimented with both running and passing offensive attacks. Ciao said he expects Barnes, also a leader for the basketball team, and Matzkin, a fullback/linebacker, to step up as the Bucs' leaders. Playing a mix of starters and backups in the spring jamboree, Berkeley lost 28-21 to Orlando First Academy, but, again, Ciao said he was encouraged, particularly with the effort and attitude.

Audibles: "I have thoroughly enjoyed everything so far at Berkeley. This turned out to be the right time and the right place for me to come back." - Ciao
