While many of the bowlers who made the trip to Reno for the U.S. Bowling Congress National Open Championships competed strongly with good scores, Todd Brower led the way with his 700 series during the singles event Sunday.
The veteran bowler's 700 series completed a three-event score of 1, 808. In the other two events he competed well, but his singles scores outshined the rest. In the team event Saturday night, Brower shot a 568 on the strength of a 221 high game.
In the doubles event, he shot a 540 without breaking 200 in a single game. He bounced back like never before in the final three-game series. His 700 included scores of 236, 221 and 243. After shooting a high of 221 in the previous six games in Reno, he did not shoot a game below that mark in his final three. For his efforts, Brower received an on-site award from the USBC.
Brower was a regular in the Wednesday Night Mixers League at Spring Hill this past season. He averaged a 226 in the league over 93 games. He is one of many who have made the trip to nationals multiple times. His last attempt was in 2003.
Also in Brower's group were a bunch of other Spring Hill Lanes regulars. Many had been several times with only Derek LaRiviere and Nick Catroppo making their first trips. Anita Hearl 10 times, Jimmy Hearl (seven), Doug Hearl (11), Chris Bernhardt Sr. (11), Chris Bernhardt Jr. (six), Scott Reilly (four), Jim Reilly (10), Mary Reilly (eight), Diane Brusati (two), Patty Mehl (two), Marilyn Peck (three), Steve Peck (three), Steve Laszlo (two), Rosanne Regan (four), Dennis Regan (four), Dom Risola (two) and Carol Risola (two) rounded out the group.
Many of these participants plan to go to next year's tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. Following that tournament, in 2009, the championships are in Las Vegas.
UPCOMING TOURNAMENT: Spring Hill Lanes will hold its annual house singles championship June 10.
The third annual ESP Signs Invitational is an invite-only tournament. Only bowlers who averaged 200-plus in the center's season leagues will receive invitations.
These bowlers can pre-register for $39 before June 7; the entry fee is $50 afterward.
All tournament and league play for that night has been suspended. The check-in time for the tournament is 5 p.m. with bowling at 6.
Each competitor will toss five qualifying games before the top eight make the single-elimination bracket finals. Optional events for the tournament include $5 scratch brackets.
There is a dress code with a collared shirt, slacks or khaki shorts required for each bowler. No competitor may wear jeans, T-shirts, hats or tank tops.
