WASHINGTON Republican Fred Thompson on Friday took a formal step toward a bid for the presidency, establishing a preliminary campaign committee. Thompson, 64, is a former Tennessee senator and actor known for his film and TV roles, including as a prosecutor on NBC's Law & Order. The move allows him to raise money, hire staff and gauge support without officially committing to a bid. Kucinich will join debate on Fox TV Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said he would participate in a Democratic debate co-sponsored by the Fox News Channel on Sept. 23 in Detroit. Kucinick, an Ohio representative, and Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., say they will participate in the debate despite pressure from liberal groups that say Fox is biased against Democrats. Candidates who say they will not participate are former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Barack Obama of Illinois and Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, and Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico. Elsewhere Chicago: A judge upheld a state board's decision to strip former Gov. George Ryan of his $197, 000-a-year pension because of his conviction last year on federal racketeering charges. Miami: A federal judge refused Friday to toss out FBI wiretap evidence in the Jose Padilla case, including an attempt by defense attorneys to prevent jurors from hearing conversations about Osama bin Laden.

Thompson's main attraction is that, like James Buchanan in 1856, he's been off the political scene for a while and therefore hasn't spoken on divisive issues. But he looks like Elmer Fudd without the animation and speech impediment.
