2D DIGEST: Microsoft and Xandros to share technology

Microsoft Corp. said Monday it will share technology with Linux distributor Xandros Inc., the latest in a string of deals meant to help the patent-protected Windows operating system work more smoothly with open-source programs. Under the terms of the agreement, New York-based Xandros, which makes and distributes open-source desktop and server software, will license server code from Microsoft and develop software tools that work with Microsoft's systems.
Sykes is moving horses to Kentucky
Entrepreneur John Sykes and his wife, Susan, are shutting down their horse farm near Ocala and shipping 12 stallions and more than 100 mares, yearlings and foals to Kentucky, where they have bought another farm, according to a report Monday by the Daily Racing Form. Sykes, founder of Sykes Enterprises, bought the 1, 000-acre CloverLeaf Farms II a decade ago for $5.75-million.
Deal creates large Jabil competitor
Flextronics International Ltd., the world's second-biggest maker of electronics for other companies, will buy Solectron Corp. for $3.6-billion to narrow the sales gap with larger rival Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Both companies are competitors of St. Petersburg-based Jabil Circuit.
Rite Aid deal for Eckerd stores done
Rite Aid Corp. said Monday it has closed an approximately $3.9-billion cash-and-stock deal to add more than 1, 850 Brooks and Eckerd stores and six distribution centers in a bid to keep up with its competitors. Jobs will be available for all affected employees, it has said.
Interest rates on T-bills slumps
Interest rates on short-term Treasury bills fell in Monday's auction with rates on six-month bills dropping to the lowest level in three weeks. The Treasury Department auctioned $15-billion in three-month bills at a discount rate of 4.710 percent, down from 4.780 percent last week. Another $14-billion in six-month bills was auctioned at a discount rate of 4.790 percent, down from 4.805 percent last week.
