In celebration of World Ocean Day, one of the United Nations' International Days, an impressive group of environmentalists will come together to raise awareness of the importance of the world's oceans and the effect that climate change is having on polar and oceanic ecosystems. Oceanographers, environmentalists, conservationists, actors and musicians are uniting to celebrate and protect our waters while cautioning of the threatening potential consequences around the world. "The purpose of the event is to call attention to the fact that global problems need global solution through such organizations as the International Ocean Institute and the United Nations, " said David Randle, one of the event's organizers. "We also want to educate the public on critical ocean issues and identify solutions that they can participate in, " Randle said. Actor Ed Begley Jr. will moderate a panel discussion on the beauty, wonder and necessity of the world's oceans and what we can do to preserve them. The panel will include Philippe Cousteau, chief ocean correspondent for Animal Planet and grandson of Jacques-Yves Cousteau; Noel Brown, president of Friends of the United Nations; Paul Boyle, chairman and chief executive officer of the Ocean Project; and Frank Muller-Karger, professor of biological oceanography at the University of South Florida. The program is presented by St. Petersburg Environmental Research Center, a consortium of agencies that aim to confront, raise awareness of, and stimulate public dialogue and action regarding worldwide environmental and social issues.
