About 4.2-million Iraqis have been displaced by violence in the country, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday. About 2.2-million have fled the country, said Jennifer Pagonis, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. A further 2-million are displaced within the country, living in "impoverished shanty towns, " Pagonis told reporters in Geneva, where the agency has its headquarters. She said about 30, 000 Iraqis continue to flee each month to Syria, which is housing 1.4-million Iraqi refugees. About 750, 000 are in Jordan.

Other developments

U.S. impatience: Defense Secretary Robert Gates hinted Tuesday at American impatience with the pace of Iraqi political reconciliation, more than four months into the U.S. troop buildup. He noted that the Iraqis missed a May 31 deadline for passing an energy law. Gates spoke at a joint news conference with Kyrgyzstan Defense Minister Ismail Isakov in Bishkek.

Al-Qaida foes killed: A suicide car bomber on Tuesday struck a group of tribal chiefs who opposed al-Qaida, killing at least 18 in a market area near Fallujah, police said.

Female bomber thwarted: A suicide bomb attack was stopped in Baghdad Tuesday when police shot a woman wearing an explosive belt.
