School Board considering calendar guidelines

For the past two years, Hillsborough School Board members have struggled to devise a school calendar.

On Tuesday, they considered a new approach.

Board members discussed guidelines that could help to address sticky issues like the religious holidays that have become lightning rods. No decisions were made, but most members still want the advice of a committee of stakeholders.

They also hope to help families plan with a set winter vacation that includes Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and a spring break that's stable from year to year.

For the coming school year, the calendar does not recognize religious holidays with days off school. Board members face another thorny issue in traditional days off for students to attend the state fair or the Strawberry Festival.

They said they plan to keep talking.
