Of course, pig-out breakfasts served all day long. 2339 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, St. Petersburg. (727) 895-6057.

Most entrees $20 or more
Chateau Prive at St. Bart's Island House
Cuisine: Caribbean, French In a space that has housed a parade of restaurants over the years, owners Philip Glassman and Scott Freyre have created a sleek home for that oh-so-au-courant style of cooking called French-Caribbean fusion, marrying fresh fish (Bahamian conch and shrimp fritters; plank-roasted wild Alaskan king salmon with a horseradish and molasses lacquer crust) and tropical fruits with such icons of French cookery as truffles and duck confit. Dishes are largely successful, the service earnest, the ambience agreeable, and the prices in the special occasion or expense account class for many of us. 1502 S Howard Ave., Tampa. (813) 251-0367.
Derek's Culinary Casual
Cuisine: New American This is true big city, indie style dining: sharp, chef-driven cooking in a plain storefront space in a not-yet-gentrified neighborhood. The star of the place is a big elliptical bar converted to a dessert island. Channelside, 615 Channelside Drive, Suite 123, Tampa. (813) 221-2929. www.grille29.com
Laughing Cat
Cuisine: Italian The Laughing Cat calls itself "New Progressive Italian, " but don't hold that against it. The charm lies in the opposite, older direction, when Italian food was hefty and lusty. The menu lists more than 150 dishes, and it's hard to characterize the style except as too much. It is perhaps best at the modestly priced lunch buffet, where more than a dozen dishes are laid out on steam tables right in front of the kitchen. 1820 N 15th St., Ybor City. (813) 241-2998.
Maritana Grille

Massimo's
Cuisine: Fine Dining, Mediterranean There's nothing rustic about the cooking of Massimo Patano, yet his love of luxurious tastes is decidedly Italian. Veal, lobster and cream sauces abound, and Patano enriches them further with sage, ricotta, balsamic and bottarga. Always creative, always sumptuous and always one of the biggest surprises on U.S. 19. 31876 U.S. 19 N, Palm Harbor. (727) 784-1881.
Salt Rock Grill
Cuisine: Seafood, Steaks The first modern surf and turf joint on the beaches still packs them in with red-hot, straight-ahead cooking. Steaks are first-rate, lobsters monstrous, wine cellar deep, seafood and fish souped up in spicy broth. The unexpected treats are root vegetables, lentils and smart spicing. 19325 Gulf Blvd., Indian Shores. (727) 593-7625. www.saltrockgrill.com
Watercolour Steakhouse and Grille
Cuisine: American, Fine Dining, Steaks No need to dread hotel food when you get a water view and solid bone-in steaks like these. Red meat gets proper saucing and fine crusty breads. Equally smart with seafood and pasta. 1201 Gulf Blvd., Clearwater. (727) 596-1100. www.watercolourgrille.com
