One last show, then Cowboys hit the road

BROOKSVILLE - Though they've been knocking around the Tampa Bay area for the better part of 20 years, playing music for a living never seems to get old for the husband-wife duo of Hapi McKenzie and Patty Pfister.

After all, says Crabgrass Cowboys founder Philip "Hapi" McKenzie, one never knows when a great gig is going to come along.

The Crabgrass Cowboys are all about putting smiles on the faces of their audiences. Whether it's a toe-tapping fiddle hoedown, a cry-in-your-beer weeper or a jaunty rockabilly classic, the quartet prides itself in providing a ditty for any occasion.

On Saturday, Hapi and Patty and their cohorts, Jimbo Davis on bass and drummer Richard Ayers, will be at the June Bandshell Bash in downtown Brooksville. It's their last local show before they hit the road for a Midwest tour of summer music festivals.

The Crabgrass Cowboys (the name is taken from an acronym for country, rockabilly and bluegrass) reflect the musical styles that made McKenzie fall in love with the guitar as a youngster.

Touring has taken the band to every state except Hawaii and has made the group a regular attraction at the Florida Folk Festival and the annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festival in Waycross, Ga.

IF YOU GO: The June Bandshell Bash features the Crabgrass Cowboys from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Hernando Park bandshell in Brooksville. The concert is free and will features an antique car and hot rod show, vendors and more. Call 754-4788.
