SPRING HILL

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office hosts the seventh annual Bowling Extravaganza on July 28 at Spring Hill Lanes, 3447 Commercial Way. Registration is at noon, with bowling at 1 p.m.

The event includes door prizes and a silent auction.

Lane and team sponsorships are now being accepted, as are signups for individual bowlers. All proceeds will help support the Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services programs, including Drug Abuse Resist Education (DARE) and Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT).

BROOKSVILLE

In disaster, computer can be your lifeline

Hernando County Emergency Management Director Thomas Leto will speak on hurricane preparedness at the next Hernando Computer Club meeting at 7 p.m. June 18 at the Hernando County Shrine Club, 13400 Montour St.

Leto's program will include the 2007 hurricane season predictions and will emphasize the use of personal computers to receive and disseminate emergency information during disasters.

SPRING HILL

Mental illness is focus of 12-week program

The National Alliance on Mental Illness/NAMI Hernando will offer its next Family-to-Family education program in August.

This is a free 12-week program for families and friends of those with mental illness. Classes are 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the Beautiful Mind consumer-run drop-in center, 10554 Spring Hill Drive (Brothers I and II Plaza).

Reservations are required. Since class size is limited to 20, early reservations are recommended. The course and all materials are free. Call Bill or Judy at 544-0352.

Host families needed for exchange students

Youth for Understanding is looking for families to host high school exchange students this summer. Most students will be from Germany, Japan, China and Thailand, but some will come from the 40 other countries involved in the nonprofit program.

Picnic offers burgers with a side of Elvis

Hernando Beach Yacht Club will host an Independence Day picnic from 5 to 9 p.m. June 30 at the club, 4163 Shoal Line Blvd.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served, as well as beans and salads, starting at 6:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Bill Lindsey as Elvis from 5:30 to 9 p.m. There will be a special patriotic song presentation by "Elvis."
