Juneteenth fest offers displays, history, music

The Juneteenth Historical Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through June 17 at Russell Street Park. The event will include Southern food, a slave artifacts display, arts and crafts, modern dancing, poetry, a teen pop and hip-hop concert Friday, an Underground Railroad trail experience June 16, and other activities. "Juneteenth" is short for June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached slaves in Galveston, Texas, two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Peace group plans demonstration
The Nature Coast Coalition for Peace and Justice will have an antiwar demonstration from 10 a.m. to noon today at Cortez Boulevard and Commercial Way. Demonstrators are in opposition to the recent vote in Congress for continued war funding, increased threats against Iran, a surge in civilian and troop deaths in Iraq, and threats to free speech.
