He's the guy, no ifs, ands or buts

The man with the THE is a surprise. Definitely.

Patriotic flags fly at the conclusion of the rodeo at Westgate River Ranch.

RIVER RANCH - At the end of the rodeo, Lee Greenwood's anthem blares through the speakers at Westgate River Ranch: "I'm proud to be an American ..."

The crowd stands. The music builds. As the singer asks God to bless his country, four horsemen gallop into the dusty arena, unfurling 7-foot-long flags.

The flags are red, with white letters rimmed in blue sequins. Each man gets a word: GOD. BLESS. THE. USA.

You wonder: Who's the THE guy?

Think about it. The dude two horses ahead gets to be GOD. The next rider is BLESS. The cowboy at the end is Mr. USA. The third horseman isn't even a noun or a verb. He's just an article. Superfluous - except for grammatical purposes.

Who is the THE guy?

- - -

You ask Leroy Mason, who runs the rodeo, if he knows him.

"Sure," Mason says. "He's my son, Grant."

So on a Saturday in June, you meet Grant and his parents for lunch at the ranch. They take off their cowboy hats. Grant blesses the chicken fingers.

He's 15, been riding horses since he was 2. He was homeschooled until last year, when he enrolled at Lake Wales High so he could join the ROTC. Finished the year with a 3.9 GPA. Wants to go to West Point.

He's not what you had in mind. You were expecting some lackey who wrangles calves and lives in a mobile home with his girlfriend, her kid and a bunch of dogs.

"Grant doesn't want to be a cowboy, and I'm thankful for that," says his dad, who used to be one. "Been on the road most of my life. We moved here so Grant wouldn't have to grow up like that. Now he has a permanent home, land, horses." Mason smiles at his son.

"He doesn't know how blessed he is."

- - -

You watch Grant get the animals ready for the rodeo. He works with a guy named Ike.

Grant's cowboy hat is white. Ike's is black. Grant doesn't shave yet. Ike has a droopy mustache. Grant's shirt has dry-cleaner creases; Ike's wilts with sweat.

The teenager and the ranch hand cover more than 300 acres on horseback, flushing bulls from pastures, driving cattle.

Mostly, the THE guy leads.

Ike brings up the rear.

- - -

A half-hour before the rodeo, you're waiting at the deli for a piece of pizza. Ike comes up and asks what sort of story you're doing. You tell him you're here to write about the guy who carries the THE flag.

Ike looks confused. "Well, that would be me."

What? you ask. How can Ike be the THE guy?

"It wasn't by choice," he tells you. "They just handed me that flag four years ago, and I've been carrying it ever since.

"But for some reason, tonight they asked me to carry BLESS. Usually, Grant's BLESS."

- - -

You find Grant's mom outside the ticket booth. Tell her about your conversation with Ike.

Judy Mason hesitates. "Oh, that Ike," she says softly. "He'll say anything to get in the paper."

- - -

As the rodeo riders get ready, you thread through them, asking: Who carries the THE flag?

Ike, says a bull rider. That would be Ike, says a trick rider. Ike, says a steer roper, then the rodeo clown. Barrel rider Caity Wall tells you she choreographed that closing number years ago. Her mom sewed the flags. Her husband is GOD.

"The THE guy?" she says, laughing. "Oh, that's always Ike."

- - -

At the end of the rodeo, as Greenwood's anthem blares through the speakers, GOD gallops into the arena.

Next comes Ike, bearing BLESS. Grant follows, gripping THE.

"I'm proud to be an American ..."

- - -

Afterward, you track down Ike.

His last name is Stein. His horse is Topper. You had it about right: He's 25, lives with the girlfriend, her kid, three dogs.

During the week, Ike takes care of 2,500 cattle. Weekends, he works at the rodeo. He's the guy who opens the bull chutes and prods the steers.

"I'm just the grunt," Ike says. "You don't want to write about me. Write about Grant."

But Grant is BLESS except when reporters come.

You're the bridge between God and country, Ike.

The genuine article.

Wow,its amazing Leroy has any employees left. There are so many negative comments about him from his own employees. I hope he reads them and learns from them. If it were not for these employees, there would be no rodeo, saloon, camping, fishing etc....
by collyn 06/26/07 06:11 PM
oh don't even go there! June bug was a icon of the ranch! 22 years of wonderful memories and lives shared! Jennifer and June always made it so much fun. 22 years loyal employee 1 screw up and your fired! SHAME ON YOU! June deserved better than that!
by Jennifer 06/25/07 01:23 AM
Hi all! I tried to stay out of this Leroy you're wrong for this one just like making sure that June & I were fired after you set us up Ive seen you do nice things 4 people but this isn't. Ike, I love you we will be ok with or without RR stop worrying
by Sad 06/24/07 03:24 PM
I love the ranch it is a fun place. To bad Leroy & Judy run it. It could be so much better. Just get the excitement back!!!! and you would sell more timeshares. Hope Richard and David are reading this. Seems everyone wants Leroy out how about YOU!!!
by pauline and steve 06/23/07 12:57 PM
Ray was one of the biggest casualties the ranch has seen for some time. The way Leroy treated him before and after his resignation was poor beyond words! We love you Ray and Ike!
by Tina 06/20/07 09:06 PM
To bad we lost Ray(thanks to Leroy) Who and what will be next! Ike? That is the most honest good man kind person left(Like Ray) Watch your back Ike Leroy destroys nice guys! We love you!
by kARLY AGAIN 06/20/07 09:03 PM
Mike, you feel sorry for Mason? I think that surely is a typo you must mean Ike or Grant surely not Leroy Mason! He is a mean unhappy man who wants to make everyone as miserable as he is! RICHARD DO SOMETHING! If u Care! Kerrie you said it all! Ditto
by Mike 06/20/07 04:45 PM
River Ranch is a great place and the RV resort (not part of Westgate or Leroy) is really nice. RR has survived decades of good and bad managers, hopefully Leroy will move on soon. I too, feel sorry for Mason.
by Kerrie 06/20/07 04:14 PM
Lies, cheats, and claim to be Christians, Westgate Ranch (LeRoy) forgot to Celebrate Memorial Day, not a banner not a flag , not a word, asked why? they forgot... and we are at WAR,shame on you Dave...shame , shame... Ike your the best..
by rv snowbird 06/20/07 12:02 PM
I don't know how all the employees are so sweet at the ranch. I as a tourist have seen Leroy in action & he is ruthless to his staff. What is the owner of river ranch thinking? PEOPLE WORK MUCH BETTER WITH PRAISE FOR THEIR GOOD DEEDS! not negativity
by employee 06/20/07 11:57 AM
Leroy Mason will never apologize cuz he is always right. David S. should fire that piece of horse manure. A gag order! SAme old bullying Leroy. Richard you should be ashamed of yourself for allowing a man like Leroy ruin the attitude of your staff!
by Justice 06/19/07 07:44 PM
What can Judy complain about to the editor? That someone printed the truth after they lied. They should just apolgize and admit they made a mistake and maybe they will get some kind of respect back. Instead of draging it on they cant win this one.
by Res583 06/19/07 04:55 PM
We don't invent stories or history - it just kinda writes itself! Two boys who know what it means "GOD BLESS THE USA" were just the victims by someone who hasn't learned to be happy with what he has! We love you Ike!
by ME AGAIN 06/19/07 01:06 PM
Yeah, they apologized alright. Judy wrote a letter to the editor and Leroy said "nobody is to talk to reporters unless directly given permission anymore!" Great idea then they cant print your lies. Way to cover it up instead of telling the truth!!!
by CARLOS 06/18/07 08:17 PM
Hey Richard nice G.M you got there! Loved and respected! NOT! AND A LYING CONIVING ALL ABOUT ME AND MY OWN KINDA GUY! NOW THATS WHO I WOULD WANT RUNNING THE SHOW FOR ME! NOT! YOUR CHOICE RICHARD AND DAVID! A BAD CHOICE BUT A CHOICE NONE THE LESS!
by karly 06/18/07 08:09 PM

by stacy 06/18/07 07:57 PM
I hope Leroy Mason & his wife Judy apologized to Ike & their son! it was a classic Leroy bullying move as usual! Hey leroy when it comes to your staff here's a idea.."CATCH THEM DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!" Instead of always bitchin them out!just a idea!
by AMY 06/18/07 07:51 PM
I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT LEROY HAS STOOPED TO THIS LEVEL.EVERYONE KNOWS THE MAN CAN'T SAY GOOD JOB TO ANY OF HIS STAFF! ITS ALWAYS THE BAD STUFF HE POINTS OUT BUT TO STEAL A TINY LIMELIGHT FROM ONE OF THE CATTLEMEN YOU ARE A EMBARRASSMENT TO THE RANCH!
by CONNIE 06/18/07 07:45 PM
Leroy Mason you should be ashamed of yourself & Judy too! Ike is a fine young man & so is Grant if you would have been honest the article would have been more about the ranch and not your family as usual! you should apologize! NOW!YOU MAKE US SICK!
by karen 06/18/07 07:40 PM
River Ranch is Americas best kept secret. swim, camp, rodeo, fish, boat, swamp buggys horseback riding, saloon ect. & hot bull riders every weekend! Ike is awesome but so is Tracy, Romina, christian, and all the people who help run this ranch! Thanks
by josh 06/18/07 07:36 PM
THE RANCH IS SO MUCH MORE THEN POOR COMMENTS BY THE MASON FAMILY! This is a place where you can camp under the stars, swim, fish with a cane pole. Meet the most incredible staff anywhere. They are the best, I know I went on a manager campout weekend!
by collyn 06/18/07 06:53 PM
I feel badly for Ike, I know him personally & He is great. I feel bad for Grant a great kid put in the middle! But most of all I feel bad for the ranch. It is a awesome fun loving place. rodeo, pools, fishing riding horses ect.& lots of guys like IKE
by Rhonda 06/18/07 02:18 AM
Kind of ironic that old cow said Ike would do anything to get into the paper, huh? The coolest thing of all? THE guy was THE guy before this rodeo, and will be THE guy long after the rodeo is behind him. That's one graceful gentleman.
by TopHer 06/17/07 08:37 PM
I just hope Ike doesn't get The boot, because He is THE Man, Who carries THE Flag. God Bless Ike a true cowboy kind and honest unlike his employer Leroy Mason!!!!!!
by An Outsider Looking In 06/17/07 08:13 PM
As an outsider its not hard to see those that lie and backstab to look good and get ahead. Regarding the Rodeo, I sure miss the GUNSLINGERS.
by Toni 06/15/07 06:25 PM
Ike is THE MAN!!!! Honest, kind, considerate and humble. Not to mention very intelligent and talented. Loves God,Country and his Mother. This world needs more people like Ike.
by Employee 06/15/07 01:25 PM
I am an employee and have seen the rodeo many times. Ike I'm sorry that we work for people who just want to be in the spotlight. IKE CARRIES THE "THE" FLAG EVERY WEEK. Maybe one day Leroy will realize its not all about the Mason family!!!
by Me 06/12/07 10:46 PM
Obviously the point of the article was that the parents shoved Ike out of the way so their kid could have the spotlight for the story. Way to go, Mom and Dad... instill those good morals. Ike, I am genuinely sorry you work for such scum.
by Sue 06/12/07 01:00 PM
Who is the THE guy?, Who cares? Hey it it's great that the kid is active in the rodeo and he makes good grades, but honestly "Lane DeGREGORY" go back to school, this article was written poorly.
