Master on the mound: Padres starter Greg Maddux makes his third career start at the Trop and his first since July 18, 2000. He is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA, having thrown two complete games for the Braves, and overall is 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA against Tampa Bay. Of the Rays, Ty Wigginton is 6-for-23 with a homer, Brendan Harris 1-for-3, Raul Casanova 0-for-5 and Dioner Navarro 0-for-3.
Hell's bells: Padres closer Trevor Hoffman has only one of his 500 saves against the Rays. The only Ray with a hit against him is Navarro, who is 1-for-2. Greg Norton and Casanova are 0-for-3 and Wigginton 0-for-1.
Great Scott: Rays starter Scott Kazmir says he is getting more comfortable pitching from the first-base side of the rubber and overall has pitched better than his stats show. He hasn't won at the Trop since July 3.
