Two Juniors bound for Japanese city as student envoys

Two local high school juniors will represent St. Petersburg this summer as student ambassadors in Takamatsu, Japan. They are: -Zoe Williams, Northeast High School. -Kanyon McLean, St. Petersburg High School. They were chosen by the city's International Relations Committee to act as stewards during the annual Sister City visit from July 8-28. The students will visit a Takamatsu senior high school for one week and live with different host families each week. They will also meet with Takamatsu's Mayor Onishi, to bring gifts and greetings from St. Petersburg and Mayor Rick Baker. The two cities have participated in the international program as Sister Cities for 47 years. Williams and McLean were selected based on their written applications, essays and interviews. After their return from Japan, the students will share their experiences with students, civic groups and other interested citizens during their senior year of high school. Sophomore reaches international fair finals Reguli E. Granger, 15, a homeschooled sophomore dual-enrolled at St. Petersburg College, was a finalist at the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, N.M. Granger placed fourth in her category of Energy and Transportation and received the fourth place award from the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. She is the daughter of Regula and Walter Granger of St. Petersburg. Two visually impaired students win awards Two local students have received 2007 Mildred Shavlan Achievement Awards, sponsored by the Pinellas Braille Group. The annual awards are presented to visually impaired students who have shown outstanding achievement during the school year. -Jamela Nelson, daughter of Mary Nelson of St. Petersburg, is involved in the transition program at Lighthouse of Pinellas, formerly Watson Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Nelson plans to work with children. -Sarah Rech, daughter of Samuel and Denise Chapman of Largo, completed her freshman year at Clearwater High School and is interested in journalism and writing.
