TARPON SPRINGS

Police arrested a man early Wednesday morning and charged him with throwing a brick through the front door of Fournos Bakery in a smash-and-grab burglary. About 2:35 a.m., an officer noticed that the front door of the bakery at 15 N Pinellas Ave., had been broken, police said. A brick was lying nearby. A tracking dog helped lead officers to the area just north of W Boyer Street. There, they found John Hayes, 53, who was carrying and dragging a garbage bag a few blocks away from the bakery, officials said. The bag was filled with stolen merchandise from Fournos, they said. Hayes was arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail, where he was being held in lieu of $10, 000 bail. Police said detectives will compare this case with similar smash-and-grab burglaries along the Alt. U.S. 19 corridor.
