Video report
- For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Pasco boy, age 3, fatally stabbed
The mother, who told New Port Richey police that she killed him, is treated at a hospital.
By JODIE TILLMAN AND JACOB H. FRIES
Published June 15, 2007
NEW PORT RICHEY - A 24-year-old mother told police Thursday that she stabbed her 3-year-old son to death, but she had not given them an explanation. Jessica Warren was in Community Hospital New Port Richey, where she was being treated for cuts to her arms, said New Port Richey police Lt. Jeffrey Harrington. Her exact condition was not immediately known, but Harrington said her injuries were not considered life-threatening. No charges had been filed. Authorities went to the Warrens' home at 5411 Maple St. about 5:30 p.m. Thursday after a relative discovered the boy in a pool of blood and Warren conscious but bleeding, Harrington said. The mother was in the living room, but police did not say where the boy was found. Police found bloodstains in several rooms in the home. The boy, whose name was not released pending notification of his father, was pronounced dead at the scene. Harrington said investigators had not determined whether Warren was attempting suicide by cutting her arms. Police had not determined whether the same weapon was used in both stabbings. Harrington did not know whether police had been to the home before Thursday. No one else lived in the residence. Detectives spoke briefly with Warren, but she had not provided many details late Thursday. Police also had not located the boy's father, who does not live at the Maple Street home, by late Thursday. Neighbors on Maple Street said they did not know much about Warren, and some thought she had been living in the neighborhood less than a year.

Jessica was a cna and good at it, what she did is insane, I'm surprised she was put in the county jail, I thought she would have been commited to a mental facility. There were no signs of her breakdown, who knows what demons were in her mind.

Find out how the mental health system works & then you will see the light. They only help you if you hurt yourself or someone else. have any idea how many people the system is flooded with? Let's get a comment from her case worker? WE are broken!!

This is no time to blame. Let's get ALL the facts. Think of the father who lost a son,the family left behind to grieve. Do some research on mental illness, volunteer at an ALF w/ mental patients. Ignorant people make me sick!!Pick up a book & read

Shamika & Carley- If she was such a great person, why didn't you help her when she needed it? I get frustrated with my 2 kids, but I never feel like hurting them! She is NOT a good person. There is NO excuse!!!!

Just beacuse you have a child doesn't mean that previous mental illnesses subside. Some people cannot help what they do. If anyone outh there has a friend who they know has problems and they have children, watch out for them; help them get help!

People are quick to judge because A MOTHER JUST SLAUGHTERED HER BABY. Get real. Yeah, she's sick alright. Sure seems like a lot of sick people these days.

Darla I don't know what story you read but your comments sound like you need to have someone look at you. This is truly a sad story so many babies are dying at the hand of someone they trust.

Every town has problems/situations like this. Not every person in NPR is this way. The fact that some of you are so blind to see that is ridiculous. regardless of where she lived, it would have happened. Comment on the story, not on NPR! RIP lil boy

My question is wheyther anyone close to this mom was recognizing signs of mental illness? The TV news indicated that relatives were concerned. How concerned were they, and what did they do about their concerns? The mom obviously had a psychotic break
