NEW PORT RICHEY - A 24-year-old mother told police Thursday that she stabbed her 3-year-old son to death, but she had not given them an explanation.
Jessica Warren was in Community Hospital New Port Richey, where she was being treated for cuts to her arms, said New Port Richey police Lt. Jeffrey Harrington.
Her exact condition was not immediately known, but Harrington said her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
No charges had been filed.
Authorities went to the Warrens' home at 5411 Maple St. about 5:30 p.m. Thursday after a relative discovered the boy in a pool of blood and Warren conscious but bleeding, Harrington said.
The mother was in the living room, but police did not say where the boy was found. Police found bloodstains in several rooms in the home.
The boy, whose name was not released pending notification of his father, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Harrington said investigators had not determined whether Warren was attempting suicide by cutting her arms.
Police had not determined whether the same weapon was used in both stabbings.
Harrington did not know whether police had been to the home before Thursday. No one else lived in the residence.
Detectives spoke briefly with Warren, but she had not provided many details late Thursday.
Police also had not located the boy's father, who does not live at the Maple Street home, by late Thursday.
Neighbors on Maple Street said they did not know much about Warren, and some thought she had been living in the neighborhood less than a year.
