Pastor named Father of Year
By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published June 18, 2007
TAMPA - As a coach, pastor and dad, the Rev. Abe Brown earned a reputation for his generosity. On Sunday, 100 Black Men of Tampa Bay gave the 80-year-old Tampa resident something in return: their Father of the Year award. Brown was one of four finalists for the award profiled by the St. Petersburg Times on Saturday. The other finalists were Sam Jones, 39, Herman Floyd, 42, and Lesley "Les" Miller Jr., 56. Brown received the award Sunday at the nonprofit organization's dinner, which commemorated June 19, 1865. That day, known as Juneteenth, was when black slaves in Texas learned they were free.
