Davis beach water being retested today

TAMPA - County health officials will test the waters near Ben T. Davis Beach again today after high bacteria levels forced a closure Friday. Hillsborough health officials attributed the harmful bacteria increase to polluted stormwater runoff and waste from boats, pets, wildlife and human sewage. The beach will remain closed to swimming until at least Tuesday, when the results of today's tests are due back. Read the beach water quality report results at www.doh.state.fl.us. Elderly woman found dead in pool

PORT RICHEY - Pasco sheriff's deputies were investigating the death of an elderly woman found in her swimming pool Sunday. A half dozen sheriff's cruisers and a van were parked outside the home at 8917 Tropical Palm Way, off Stone Road. Sgt. Roy Haynes would not say Sunday whether authorities viewed the woman's death as suspicious. Two of the woman's family members were standing on the porch and crying Sunday evening while talking with deputies. The home was cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.

 

Beauties, baseball Sunday at the Trop

ST. PETERSBURG - This year's Miss Florida Pageant contestants will join the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field on Sunday as the pageant gets under way in St. Petersburg. Preliminary pageant rounds will be held June 27-29 at the Mahaffey Theater. The final competition and crowning is June 30. The Rays play the Los Angeles Dodgers at 1:40 p.m. Sunday, just in case you were wondering. Pageant information: www.missflorida.org.

 

Police: Pregnant woman assaulted

TAMPA - An 18-year-old man was arrested Sunday at the Florida Aquarium, accused of grabbing his pregnant companion by the neck and throwing her to the floor. Terrence Bernard Epps, of 2028 Bearss Ave., was arguing with the woman around 4:30 p.m. when the fight got physical, according to an arrest affidavit. He is being held without bail at the Orient Road Jail on a charge of aggravated assault on a pregnant female, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a $10, 000 fine. The report said the woman was seven months pregnant with Epps' child.
