  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

TREASURE ISLAND - Surfers, you out there? International Surfing Day will be celebrated Saturday at Suncoast Surf Shop on Treasure Island.

The event is presented by the surf shop, Surfrider Foundation - Sun Coast Chapter, Gulfster.com and Gulf Surf Forum.

Barry Morse, buyer for Suncoast Surf Shop and coordinator of the event, began surfing 25 years ago.

He described the observance as a day when surfers can give back to the sport. "We love being in the ocean, " he said. "It's just a day to take aside, enjoy surfing."

There will be a breakfast at 8, and afterward, participants will go to a cleanup at Sunset Beach.

"If there're waves that day, we'll be happy to surf, but this time of the year, it's kind of flat, " Morse said about the waves. "That's why we do a beach cleanup - do some good for the neighborhood."

The Suncoast Surf Shop and Quiksilver will present "Meet the Shapers" from noon to 4 p.m. at the shop. The program will feature some of the top surfboard shapers in the state. Surfboard shapers determine what type of design best suits a surfer, and therefore, are in part responsible for its performance

Free hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas and water will be served.

Surfrider's Sun Coast Chapter has held the celebration in St. Pete Beach for the past two years. This is the first year it will be in Treasure Island.

Now in its third year, the annual observance was established by Surfing Magazine to encourage surfers to celebrate the sport and help the environment by cleaning up their favorite beach. Breakfast will be provided by Steve Willis, owner of MaxWax Candle Co., and Suncoast Surf Shop.
