Stovall's stock rapidly rising
The second-year Buc is making a big push to start at receiver.

Maurice Stovall's hard work during the offseason has impressed coach Jon Gruden.
|
|
TAMPA - Starting the final two games of the '06 season, Maurice Stovall demonstrated an ability to make extra yards after the catch.
"I think every time you catch the ball any player should think to go score, " Stovall said. "Why should you go down if the ball is in your hands? You might as well make the most of the opportunity. That's when the show begins, right?"
Stovall has put on a show this offseason. Given an opportunity to become the Bucs' No. 2 receiver, ahead of former first-round pick Michael Clayton, Stovall's running with it.
At 6 feet 5, 220 pounds with sure hands, Stovall finished his rookie season with just seven catches for 102 yards and two carries for 29 yards. He was limited by a nagging back injury and buried on the depth chart.
Those numbers hardly compare to Clayton's first pro season in 2004, when he earned rookie of the year consideration with 80 receptions for 1, 193 yards and seven touchdowns.
But Clayton's career has spiraled downward, with just 65 catches and one touchdown over the past two injury-plagued seasons.
Which is why coach Jon Gruden is giving Stovall, 22, and former Chargers and Dolphins receiver David Boston, who hasn't caught an NFL pass since the 2005 season, a chance to play opposite starter Joey Galloway.
"(Clayton) is a good player, but the guys around him are getting good, too, " Gruden said. "It's going to be very interesting. I love Mike (Clayton). He's had a lot of injuries in the last couple seasons (and) hasn't been able to finish the '05 or '06 season healthy.
"Maurice Stovall is not here to sign autographs on the sideline. He's here to play. He's going to get a great look here during the offseason. David Boston hasn't caught a pass in the NFL (since 2005). But those are two guys who have really worked their butt off. Mike Clayton, I think, sees that, I think realizes that, and it'll make for a very competitive situation here in training camp."
Focusing almost exclusively on defense in the draft, the Bucs stood pat at the receiver position in the offseason. That puts pressure on Gruden to squeeze more production from his returning corps of receivers.
A third-round pick in 2006 from Notre Dame, Stovall is a quiet, introspective player who overcame personal tragedy at the start of his rookie season. His mother, Cynthia, died last May of ovarian cancer but was able to see her son graduate from Notre Dame and earn a job in the NFL.
As a tribute, Stovall has a tattoo of a crucifix with the name "Cynthia" on his right shoulder. A tattoo of a black angel with wings is on his left biceps. Before he leaves the practice field every day, he kneels in prayer.
By all accounts, Stovall has been a fixture at the Bucs' training facility this offseason and his drive has never been questioned.
"I've always been that way and set high expectations for myself and I try to never be satisfied with where I am, whether it was high school or college, " Stovall said.
"It was the same way at Notre Dame. They have a high expectation level. I just carried that on into the NFL being a professional and it's time to step it up because not everybody gets this opportunity, so why not make the most of it?"
Let the show begin.
"He started for us last year as a rookie; that's no mistake, " Gruden said. "It's no mystery, really. He's 6 foot 5, he's in great shape, he's a reliable guy, he's tough as hell and he wants to play. At least that's what he's showing out here every day. He's a guy that gives us a size factor, I think a physical playmaker and a guy that's going to make for a real interesting camp."

I say give him a chance if he looks that good. Dru is right the pads must go on first to truley evaluate players, but I think we already know what Clayton can do.When it comes to recievers alot of great NFL receivers weren`t first round picks.

The guy proved himself on Saturdays and he is a physical specimen. He is going to have a big year if someone behind center can get him the ball.

That's my whole point. Let's not crown this guy as king because he went 3 or 4 games without dropping a pass. I hope he does become a star, but the only time he's looked like one was his senior year at Notre Dame.

Actually James, he isn't. He was available in the 3rd round because he dropped more passes than he should at ND, the senior bowl and the combine. He also drops passes in camp and practice and punishes himself by doing push-ups.

Ok let the best man win.Problem is, who's scared of this triple threat? Answer: nobody! We need to bring in a legitimate receiver instead of hoping one of these guys step up.Stovall might be great, but Gruden you better have a Plan "A" incase he isn't

I watched him last year at training camp and really believed he would have got more action last year. I think we all will be happy with him . He is going to open eyes this year with a QB who can get the ball to him!!

Fair enough. I'm just saying Clayton, Stovall and Boston all seem to be similar players (physical but not always sure-handed), so let's not throw one away for the other just yet. Look at Houshmandzadeh's 1st 3 yrs in the league before ya dump Clayton

Competition can be a fuel to drive people to succeed. It looks as if Gruden is trying to use it to drive Clayton, Stovall, and all of our Bucs. God Speed to all of them.

why NOT give him a chance? he may not have proven himself yet, but if gruden really is on the hot seat, he needs to find some playmakers, and that means giving untested guys a shot.

What's football practice without pads?Meaningless. He has to prove himself on Sunday. There are a lot of great practice/mini-camp players all around the league that don't do squat on the field.Worst thing for the fans;they rely on a moron to evaluate

Stovall is the real deal, 6 foot 5 in, and he can make plays after the catch. What is the problem johnny G put this stud in the starting spot. he can't be any worse than who we have there now. Not the mention that when he did start he was solid.

I'm sorry, but how desperate are we as Buc fans when we're ready to throw away an '04 1st rd draft pick for a guy who put up 131 yds of offense last year?

Smoke screen! Don't be fooled by this annual Gruden motivation ploy. Each year we are told Boston & others are setting the world on fire, only to have the same ol starters @ start of season. Boston won't make this team, Stovall won't start! SOS!

Where there's smoke, there's fire. I know Clayton has looked bad the past two years, but if Gruden's on the hot seat and he still stands by him, there must be more to him than we can see on Sunday. I'll bet a healthy Clayton can still work wonders.

Clayton could end up like Reidel Anthony and Jacquez Green if he doesn't break out this year. Out of the league entirely.

Coach Gruden has stood by Clayton throuh all of his problems. That includes the time when Clayton was fat and out of shape two years ago. Gruden has given this joker more than enough chances to succeed. Time for Clayton to pay Coach Gruden back.

I agree with Sue.. It's like getting that phone call," Hi.. I'm from the IRS and I'm here to help you".. As for Maurice Stovall, I was excited when we drafted him.. A big guy with good hands.. Maybe this season will be his chance...

Clayton you are done if not traded or released you will not play much. Gruden used the words I love Michael Clayton that is the kiss of death.
