Bucs take hard line regarding Plummer
The QB could be hit hard in the pocketbook if he doesn't play in '07.
By RICK STROUD
Published June 22, 2007
TAMPA -- The Bucs aren't going to let Jake Plummer stiff-arm them much longer.
Plummer is subject to being fined for missing the Bucs' three-day mandatory minicamp that concluded Thursday, and indications are the team will ask him to repay about $7-million of a prorated signing bonus if he fails to play this season.
Tampa Bay acquired the rights to the quarterback, 32, from the Broncos on March 3, prompting him to announce plans to retire. Bucs general manager Bruce Allen said Thursday he recently spoke to Plummer and the team still hopes he reports to training camp July 27.
"You can't unilaterally retire as a player in the NFL," Allen said, "because you have a contract. He is under the same obligations as every player on the team.
"It is no different than when Keenan McCardell didn't report to camp (in 2004) or when you see other players hold out."
McCardell was ordered to repay $1.5-million of his signing bonus after being traded to the Chargers.
Plummer has three years left on his contract and is scheduled to earn $5.3-million in 2007, most among the Bucs' quarterbacks and which counts against the salary cap. Plummer was the only one of 95 players who did not attend the minicamp.
"We traded for him with the intent of him playing for the Buccaneers," Allen said. "He knows that, and we've been very clear what we see for him and his future. We'll just have to see if we have a meeting of the minds."
Plummer has reiterated his decision to retire since the trade but hasn't filed papers with the league.
If Plummer elects to play, the Bucs owe Denver a fourth-round pick in 2008. Otherwise, it becomes a seventh-rounder. Allen said the Bucs have not entertained the idea of trading Plummer.
"The intent is the absolute same. We want him on our team," Allen said.
"He's on our salary cap right now, and he missed minicamp. By contract, there's certain obligations a player has. We're going to have further talks with him."
Allen wouldn't specifically address what sanctions they might seek.
"Obviously, we haven't missed a beat with him not here," Allen said. "We're preparing for our season. The quarterback competition ... has been very lively, and we feel good with the players we have here. So we're not waiting for anybody."
Meanwhile, Chris Simms, one of six quarterbacks who worked out, still is struggling to regain his throwing motion after September's surgery to remove his spleen.
"I see Chris' future no different than it has been the last few years," Allen said. "He's one of the hardest workers you'll find. He loves the game of football, and he will regain his stroke because he's dedicated to the game. He'll get better with time. He's a young man who's got a good future."
Coming off a 4-12 record, the Bucs' third losing season in the past four, Allen said he and coach Jon Gruden feel no additional pressure to win in 2007.
"You feel that pressure no matter what you do in life, and it doesn't matter what team you're on," he said. "And you love it."
Among other subjects Allen addressed Thursday:
- The Bucs have contacted safety Donavin Darius, who was released by the Jaguars last week. Darius, 31, has visited Oakland and received interest from Carolina and Buffalo. He has played just 12 games in the past two seasons because of injuries. "We've checked into Donavin Darius, " Allen said. "But we like where we're at right now."
- Defensive end Charles Bennett, who missed most of the minicamp with a left knee injury, could begin the season on the physically unable to perform list. He would not be eligible to return until Week 7. "Other than that, everybody else will be ready to go, " Allen said.
- Allen does not expect any problem signing the 10 draft picks before training camp.

Sheese I feel like a frustrated school teacher here Aaron. Saap, Lynch, et al left because your buddy Rich McKay sold his soul to the devil for "MESHAWN" and others. The Cap has the final say & Allen more than Gruden. Okay? The Cap was a mess.

scouts evaluate but gruden has the final say. otherwise the scouts for the bucs would have told jon that garcia is told old, weak armed, getting brittle and has sloppy footwork. come on mike it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that.

Why do you keep triple posting? Tony couldn't win with the team. It took him FIVE years to win a SB with the BEST
team in the NFL. Scouts evaluate talent.
Coaches coach. Best players WIN. It ain't rocket science Aaron. Move on!!!

Aaron, pay very close attention: there have been 40 Super Bowls in history. Only 20 coaches have won Super Bowls. Gruden is one of them. One reason his offense sucked was because of Simms, et al. He needs better players. It's not rocket science....

what i do understand about simms is that he is a good young qb. what YOU dont understand is that gruden's offense stinks. the offense has done nothing since he has been here. after this year we wont have to worry about that though. he will be gone.

What don't you understand about Simms? Here's the Scouting report: Not well suited for Gruden's run and gun offense. He needs a QB that is mobile, makes plays with his feet and throws accurate passes. Forget Garcia's age. He'll make plays. Move on.

with the FA's out there @ qb; garcia, carr, huard and harrington the pickings were pretty slim. simms is better now and will have a better career than any of these guys. we could have gone REAL old and gotten vinny back. he's 44, you would enjoy that

i would like to win now too. but not at the expense of the future. you are right the D & the OL are bigger issues. we wasted $ on garcia when we could have gotten Steinbach or leonard davis. nate clements or mike doss.

I feel they have to win now. I believe in building too. I believe Simms is NOT a starter in the NFL. He had a few "decent" games. But he's not your messiah aaron. Move on to bigger issues, such as the OL and defense. Garcia is better NOW.

the point wasnt that they didnt do things in college it was that they were taken in later rounds and went on to do something in the pros, which simms will do.

Simms does have a future in IAF. Montana was a WINNER at Notre Dame; won the big games. Farve was 33rd overall in '91. He won HUGE games as a FR/Soph/Jr. Sr/Yr almost killed in a wreck, 30" of his guts removed. Joe & Farve WON big college games.

Brady Quinn is such a great QB, he dropped to 22nd. You crack me up. Jeff George had the best arm ever in the NFL. Tell me about Jeff George. Simms is a bust as far as a starter. Great kid though. Wish him the best when he's traded.

see if we got brady quinn we wouldnt be having this discussion. garcia is just a band-aid. not good for the long term. if we got quinn in there i wouldnt be upset, because that move would have been for the FUTURE not the "fix it quick save my butt"

a real o-line will understand when you block you have to be able to prevent the d-line from putting their hands into the passing lanes. this isnt young vs. simms. but if you want to go there youngs arm was nothing like simms.

aaron, will a real OL teach Simms NFL technique and how to throw the ball higher than six feet off the ground. Steve Young had legs. Simms??? My Grandmother can outrun him.

I hope jake decides to play. Denver was my favorite team ever since i was 5. After Cutler stepped in I refuse to cheer for them anymore due to the fact that Plummer has been my fav. player since he started with Denver! I think hes an amazing QB!

simms and young have nfl caliber talent. our o-line does not. simms has records too. #1 alltime yds in a game, #2 efficency, #2 td passes, 3rd fastest to 300 yds in a season, #1 in td in a game on many more. give him a real line and he will produce!

aaron it was obvious to students of Pros that Steve Young had NFL calibre talent. He was drafted in the first round by the Bucs in 1984. Simms is a Third round pic, who never won a big game at Texas. Steve Young set many records at Brigham Young.

is it simms fault that his line was so awful and they had no back willing to pick up a block? steve young couldnt escape that pass rush. give him a competent line and he will produce.

Couldn't agree LESS with aaron and anyone who thinks Simms is the future of the Bucs. I can't think of one team in the NFL, where Simms could start. Have any of you people seen the Bucs schedule for this year. GOOD LUCK!! It's worse than '06.

Hey Dru, Hows your great GM doing in hotlanta? His hire for coach up there already flamed, his overpaid qb is about to be incarcerated (look it up in the dictionary), and he left our cap in the red. Going to a rival is the best he could do for us.
