Alissa Jouret, 10, Jessica Hanna, 8, and other children attending the Thumbs Up for Animals weeklong program at the SPCA enjoy Doggy Day on Tuesday with Rusty, the education dog.
“The program is designed to get animal-loving kids interested in working with the shelter and sharing their love of animals,” said Sharon Hauser, director of Thumbs Up and Rusty’s owner.
As part of the program, the children baked dog biscuits (see recipe below). The week also included programs on cats, pocket pets, farm animals and a visit to the Lowry Park Zoo.
Dog biscuits recipe: 21/2 cups of any kind of flour1/2 tsp. of garlic powder 1/2 cup powdered dry milk 6 tbsp. margarine, lard or bacon fat 1 egg 1 tsp. brown sugar 1/2 cup water or beef broth
• Mix flour, dry milk and garlic. • Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles corn meal. • Beat the egg and sugar together and add to the dry mixture. • Add water to make the dough stiff. • Knead until smooth and pliable. • Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness. • Bake on a greased cookie sheet at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes. • To harden even more, leave in the oven after turning off heat.
Tip: You can save poultry, meat, vegetables, soup and table scraps and add to the basic recipe.
