Daughter testifies in father's abuse trial
The 62-year-old man's attorney says the case is full of inconsistencies.
By MOLLY MOORHEAD
Published June 22, 2007
DADE CITY - All three victims were young girls living with Robert Douglas Aswell when they say the abuse happened.
One is his daughter. One is his step-granddaughter. The third woman doesn't know the other two, but she said Aswell abused her as a teenager too.
Aswell, 62, of 3225 Canal Place in Land O'Lakes, faces charges of capital sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation. His trial began Thursday.
The first witness to testify was Aswell's daughter, now 18 and a recent high school graduate. She said the abuse began when she was 7, during summer visits with her father after her parents divorced, before she understood what was happening. It ended when she was 14.
"I told him this is not right and it has to stop, " she testified.
But she never told authorities or any family members about the sexual abuse until a second victim came forward - Aswell's step-granddaughter who was also 7 at the time of the alleged abuse.
Defense attorney Scott Davis said the case against Aswell, which he called the "biggest nightmare that a grandfather or father can possibly imagine, " is fraught with such inconsistencies. There were delays in the investigation, changing stories from the victims as well as irrational behavior.
Aswell's daughter, for instance, asked to live with her father after all the years of abuse, Davis said.
"It's not reasonable for somebody who claims to have been molested, " Davis said.
The trial continues today before Circuit Judge Pat Siracusa.

Molly Morehead, If you really want to presue as a reporter then you need to learn to get your facts straight before for put them in print. I don't even remember seeing you the first day of trial anyway. So who are you to put forth any opinion of me?

AS far as Mr Davis' comment about unreasonable behavior.I was making a choice between living in a situation of curent abuse or a situation that was at one time abusive but,now okay. What would you have chosen? No child should have to go through this!

If there is any doubt in anyone's mids about the truth in this story well there shouldn't be. As for my reasons for not coming forward (not that they need explaining) but, this whole situation to me is extremely embarassing.

I Thank GOD that the jury listened to every aspect of this trial and did the only thing that was right they understood the girls nervousness and mistakes When they thought it was their fault and were afraid to come forward in the begining.

Why are the only articles about this trial a reflection of the defensees point of view and nothing from the prosecution or victims point of view???

I am the grandmother of the 2 girls and if you sat thru the trial like I did you would know he was guilty. Sure people forget some times especially kids but when an unknown comes forward with the exact same story after 23 years you know the truth.

Inconsistencies...what do you expect when you're dealing with the memories of children who were abused. He got what he deserved as determined by a trial and a jury of his peers. What more is there to say?

Let me just start by saying that justice has been served. May he rot in the place he has been sent and I can only hope he gets treated as he treated those three girls. My heart felt thanks goes out to the jurors that let justice prevail.

Bob your an idiot a& an insensitive jerk. A child that is abused is made to feel ashamed & that they somehow brought it upon themselves or are told if they tell no one will believe them.Pretty heavy for a kid to handle, most adults couldnt deal.

If he actually did this to those 7 year olds he should be punished to the limit. If the girls are fabregating this then they should be punished more so for messing a mans reputation up.It happens.

If this is all true, then he should rot in a jail cell. There is no defense to molesting a child, let alone your own, which should carry a heavier sentence.
