  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

EAST LAKE

Are those tools too big for your small hands? Tomboy Tools will demonstrate tools sized for women at a lunch meeting of the Palm Harbor Newcomers Alumnae and Friends on July 5 at the East Lake Woodlands Country Club, 1005 East Lake Woodlands Parkway. All are welcome. The cost is $16 and reservations are due by Friday. Call (727) 784-3386.

Dogs can still walk in park, for now

In case you are wondering, dogs are still allowed on the northern boardwalk at John Chesnut Sr. Park, but not on the two boardwalks on the southern part of the park. A sign at the north trail says dogs are allowed on that trail temporarily. Presumably, that will continue until Pinellas County officials make a final decision.

Recycle old phone books in East Lake

If you haven't thrown your old phone books away yet, why not recycle? You can drop them off in collection bins on the north side of John Chesnut Sr. Park, 2200 East Lake Road. To reach the bins from East Lake Road, turn into Sandy Point Road and they will be on the left.

OLDSMAR

City takes over recycling July 1

To recycle your old phone books in Oldsmar just put them in your recycling bin. As of July 1, the city takes over curbside recycling and things will change a bit. Glass will no longer be accepted, but the city will start taking mixed paper including magazines. Aluminum cans, newspapers, steel cans and plastic bottles will be accepted, but no cardboard. Call (813) 855-5257.

Keep leaves, grass out of storm drains

While you're saving the environment, the Oldsmar water department asks you not to rake or blow leaves and grass into streets or storm drains. That way fertilizers and pesticides won't go directly into Tampa Bay.

Sword display and book discussion

Check out the swords in the second-floor display case at the Oldsmar Public Library, 101 State St. W, before the show ends Saturday . Oldsmar resident Gregory Evans, 14, has a collection a museum would envy. The library is also offering a discussion of the book Elizabeth and Mary by Jane Dunn at noon Thursday in the library meeting room. Bring your lunch, and the library will spring for dessert. Call (813) 749-1178.

Very Special Arts exhibit on display

Continuing through Saturday at City Hall, 100 State St. W, is an exhibit of works by Very Special Arts, artists with disabilities. Media ranges from painting to photography and more and some are for sale. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call (813) 749-1260.

COUNTYWIDE

Pinellas Human Resources Job Fair

Large law enforcement agency seeking a few good applicants. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Human Resources Division is having a Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pinellas County Jail Healthcare Facility, 14400 49th Street N. The agency is recruiting interested applicants in the fields of inmate medical care, detention, law enforcement and support staff. Call 582-6208 or visit www.pcsoweb.com.
