Pull up your pants, you big buffoon

A town in Louisiana has passed a law against this kind of getup.

All right, call me an old goat, a geezer, an old codger, a curmudgeon, an Uncle Tom or any other unflattering name.
I don't care.
Let it be known, here and now, that I hate saggin' pants. I dislike being in the company of anyone wearing these buffoonish, self-loathing and effeminate getups.
You've seen the hip-hop style: pants three or more sizes too large that are worn below the behind, showing underwear, filthy flesh often in plain view.
Call me old-fashioned if you wish.
I have a lot of company. The Cajun town of Delcambre, La., (pop. 1, 700) recently passed an ordinance, which states: "It shall be unlawful for any person in any public place or in view of the public to be found in a state of nudity, or partial nudity, or in dress not becoming to his or her sex, or in any indecent exposure of his or her person or undergarments, or be guilty of any indecent or lewd behavior."
Delcambre Mayor Carol Broussard said of the new law and of saggers: "If you expose some of your privates - the crack of your behind - if somebody feels insulted, they should press charges. If you're offended by it, we want to straighten that out."
According to the Christian Science Monitor, Broussard is not alone. In many other parts of the country, school districts, city councils and mayors are fed up with saggers and are seeking questionable legal action, which I disagree with. Civic groups in Atlanta, Detroit and Birmingham, Ala., are organizing antisagging measures. A Florida senator hasn't given up on a bill to outlaw saggin' pants in public schools.
And the Rev. Diane Robinson of Jacksonville, whose effort I like, is handing out free belts through an initiative she calls "Pull Up Your Pants - Need Some Help, Here's a Belt!"
People who study such trends offer two main versions of how this subculture originated. One states that during American slavery, some white masters would rape their African male slaves, and after the criminal deeds were consummated, the victims were forced to wear their pants sagging so that their masters could identify them for future pleasures.
In other words, dehumanized black slaves wearing saggin' pants were said to be announcing that they were available for their white masters. Over time, the style became a little-talked-about subculture that seeped into general black culture.
The other version says the fashion developed in prison among black convicts. I quote Judge Greg Mathis of television's Judge Mathis show. He knows what he's talking about. He served eight months in jail when he was 17, and he has studied the saggin' phenomenon in his effort to understand some of the young men he would have to sentence.
"In prison you aren't allowed to wear belts to prevent self-hanging or the hanging of others, " Mathis said in the May 7 issue of Jet magazine. "They take the belt and sometimes your pants hang down. ... Many cultures of the prison have overflowed into the community unfortunately. ... Those who pulled their pants down the lowest and showed their behind a little more raw, that was an invitation. (The youth) don't know this part about it. I always tease and tell them that they better be careful because some man who has been in prison 30 years who comes home and doesn't know any difference may think it's an open invitation."
Despite his humor from the bench, Mathis is philosophical about saggin' and its deleterious impact on black males: "Young people have given up on society as a result of the obstacles they face. Instead of fighting back, they join the subculture of drugs and crime as a means of what they believe will uplift them from poverty. So you have this (interchange) of what is cool and hip in the 'hood and what is hip and cool in prison. You have a (revolving) door. ... I want to challenge our brothers to pull up their pants and lift up their head. ... We're no longer slaves. We are free to fight back, and that's what we must do."
The good judge is spitting in the wind. By all accounts, the saggin' craze grows stronger by the day. In fact, an increasing number of white, Hispanic and Korean males are adopting saggin'. The reality, of course, is that these white, Hispanic and Korean youngsters know when it's time to grow up and put away their unsavory low-slung wear.
Not so with too many young black males, who never grow up. They go to their untimely graves saggin'.

It will go out of fashion sometime. Just like the -bell-bottoms that drove my parents crazy. Lets' worry about more important things then how the young-ones express their individual peer identity!

I see the sagging look daily,in my travels. At first I thought it was a fad, but this look has lasted for many years now. I am just amazed that some guys have to hold their pants constantly to get the "look".I saw a guy trying to cut the lawn bagging.

I enjoyed your article about the sagging pants. I'm a teacher. My school has a dress code. I abhor the low riding pants and I chuckle every time I see a young man walk funny just to keep his pants from falling down.

I thought the reason they wore those pants was because they were not toilet trained and were wearing diapers, which we all know tend to sag when wet. Of course, if they're trying to catch you, they'll trip.

I am a police officer and I really think you have hit the nail on the head! I am glad to see someone has said the truth on this matter! What ever happened to having a sense of STYLE when you go out in public? I feel that society has lost this!

I worked in the Florida prison system for over 22 years and I can say with authority that inmates are issued belts and must wear them. You will see no saggy pants in a Florida prison. Or long hair. Or obvious gang participation. Love your column.

I don't think this article is a waste of space. You can't clear hurdles if your mind is too busy stuck in a certain style. You can't judge a book by its cover, but in this case, the cover usually speaks volumes about the content.

This article was such a waste of space. With all the difficult issues facing us today, Mr. Maxwell writes about street fashion. That's irresponsible.

I'm offended by everything, so let's ban it all! I'm being sarcastic of course, and I hate the low hanging pants too. But kids will always find something to annoy their elders and this is one of them.

What bothers me more than anything is when these "saggers" get older and need hip replacements who is going to pay for it. YES, you and you and me. Our Social Security will also pay them disability and when we need it, it will be exhausted.

Also, it seems that way too many people associate this style of dress with "what it means to be black". It's like I say to my friends, I don't like being around people who purvey the negative stereotype, but it seems to have made itself "culture".

I'm 22, and I hate the sagging pants. Guys waddle up to me, and hit on me, not only with the sagging pants, but the sagging brains and mouths (mumbling/slurring/too much slang). Of course, I'm insecure in my race, or selling out for not liking it.

As an Afr. Am., I strongly detest this new phenomenon of any race. However, as I look at this photo, this not only affects my community/people but, the caucasian community as well. The mere notion that this is an expression of coolness of hip is BS!

Bill, i am with you, but the issue as i see it is "common decentcy' versus societal anarchy. It is the self centered and immature who claim "we should be able to wear clothing anyway THEY want to in public. with no regard for others' views or rights.

I'm a police officer and I love when all the criminals I deal with routinely wear their pants in this manner. It just solidifies for me and anyone else who has any common sense just how ignorant they are. The morons can't run from the police too.

I disagree with you on this one. I dont think it really matters how one wears pants. I do agree that these folks will never amount to much. So I understand what your saying. I think in some ways there is a little buffoon in us all.

I feel you Bill but I don't like your close. It doesn't make a difference what color they are. Its an issue of kids expressing themselves these days whether we like it or not. I don't approve of it myself but its a kid fad thing not a color thing.

Heard a third story;kids wear saggy pants because parents wore tight jeans. Idea, always, to be different enough from 'rents to annoy. Obviously working! Best way for parents to stop it is to do it themselves. Kids will stop in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the article.Driving to work I saw a kid walking to school with his buttocks in full display. I got so angry that I rolled down my passenger window and yelled,"you need to pull your pants up."He looked shocked but pulled up his pants

ban womens clothing that shows cleavage, belly buttons and ankles while you're at it.
it's just like old, un-sexy, washed up, women who whine about girls who dress like "whores". it's displaced jealousy.

While I was serving time in the Florida system 'tween '80 'n' '83, the only ones who wore their pants like that were the 'punks' - the ones who were giving away or selling their asses.
