Steve Carell proved not nearly as all-powerful as Jim Carrey. Evan Almighty, with Carell taking over for Carrey in a followup to the comedy smash Bruce Almighty, debuted a solid No. 1 with $32.1-million, though that was less than half the $68-million opening of its predecessor, according to studio estimates Sunday. Released by Universal, the Stephen King adaptation 1408, a Weinstein Co. horror tale with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the story of a man trapped in a hotel room with malevolent spirits, debuted in second place with $20.2-million. Rounding out the top five: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, $20.5-million; Ocean's Thirteen, $11.3-million; and Knocked Up, $10.6-million.
A neurotic Puccini in Allen's hands?
Woody Allen directing an opera? In Los Angeles? It will happen in September 2008, according to Placido Domingo, general director of the Los Angeles Opera. The New York filmmaker will make his operatic directorial debut with the opening event of the L.A. Opera's 2008-09 season, the Associated Press reported. "I have no idea what I am doing, " he said. "But incompetence has never prevented me from plunging in with enthusiasm." Allen is scheduled to direct Gianni Schicchi, part of Puccini's Il Trittico, a trio of one-act operas. Domingo said it took him four years to get Allen to say yes.
