HOSPITAL PATIENT WANTS A SMOKE, GETS ARRESTED
A patient at Springbrook Hospital wanted a cigarette Saturday night. And he said nothing was going to stop him. So when a doctor's aide said he couldn't leave, the patient, Vernard Goodman, 48, kicked the aide in the groin and put him in a headlock, according to a Sheriff's Office report. Goodman was arrested and faces charges of battery.
Housing Authority meets Wednesday
The Hernando County Housing Authority will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the County Commission chambers at Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. For information, call the Housing Authority at 754-4160.

Barbecue benefits two ministries
Ridge Manor United Methodist Church will host a communitywide barbecue at noon Sunday at the church, 34350 Cortez Blvd. The menu will include barbecued chicken, baked beans, rice pilaf, coleslaw, rolls, fresh-brewed iced tea and homemade desserts. Tickets are $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeout orders will be available. Funds raised will benefit the adult and youth ministries. For information, call the church office at 583-3770.

Bowling fun helps sheriff's programs
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office will host its seventh annual Bowling Extravaganza July 28 at Spring Hill Lanes, 3447 Commercial Way. Registration will be at noon, with bowling at 1 p.m. The event will include door prizes and a silent auction. Lane and team sponsorships are being accepted, as well as signups for individual bowlers. All proceeds will help support the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services programs, including Drug Abuse Resist Education and Gang Resistance Education and Training.
