NBA-sized party pad up for sale

Ex-NBA star Matt Geiger's East Lake estate is on the market, but he isn't moving far.

EAST LAKE - Matt Geiger's mansion is the envy of any bachelor. The sprawling estate boasts several lavish bars, a DJ station and dance floor, hot tubs, a pizza oven and even a cigar room.

Only problem is, Geiger is settling down.

The former NBA player recently had a baby with his girlfriend, and another is on the way.

So he has put a price tag on the party pad: nearly $20-million.

"It's not really baby-friendly, " Geiger's Realtor, Toni Everett, said of the 28, 000-square-foot house.

The master bedroom and the other bedrooms aren't on the same floor, and Geiger wants to be closer to his children, she said. Plus, she said, there isn't anyplace suitable for a playroom.

But he isn't moving far. Geiger is building a child-friendly house in nearby Bison Creek Estates, a gated community that he is developing on Keystone Road.

Contacted Tuesday, Geiger, 38, declined to comment. The 7-foot-1 former Countryside High School star built his home after his NBA career with the Miami Heat, the Charlotte Hornets and the Philadelphia 76ers ended.

When it was finished, Geiger's mansion became the largest residence in Pinellas County.

The house "was really built for entertaining, " Everett said.

And Geiger put it to use.

Since the home was completed in 2003, the basketball star has hosted a number of parties for friends and charities - from a New Orleans-themed bash to "Geigerween, " for which he transformed the mansion into a supersized haunted house.

Geiger went all out: 40 televisions, 18 of them wired with Xbox so that Geiger and his buddies from high school could play video games together, plus a 330, 000-gallon pool and a 5, 200-square-foot guest house.

The big house has had a crack at the big screen, too.

Scenes from the movie The Punisher were filmed there in 2003. In the movie, Geiger's home became the estate of a gangster played by John Travolta.

Geiger enjoyed a putting green and a man-made lake stocked with 2, 500 bass and had a personal herd of livestock that has included 12 buffalo, 11 Watussi, two donkeys, a miniature horse and one cow on the 40-acre estate.

Though some might question the practicality of selling such opulent real estate in today's deflated housing market - the asking price for Hulk Hogan's Belleair mansion recently dipped from $25-million to $17.9-million - Everett said she isn't worried. "It's what I do, " she said of selling pricey homes.

The Pinellas County Property Appraiser's Office puts the market value of Geiger's estate and an adjacent piece of property at $11-million, based on other sales from 2004-2005. The property tax bill for the estate would be more than $177, 000 - a year. The vacant parcel, if the agricultural exemption is lost, would cost another $48, 943 in taxes.

The key may be finding buyers who like to party.

"In many ways it is a perfect house for a couple who entertains, " she said.

Though the interior is all high-quality, according to Everett, it would be a shame to let some of Geiger's more playful amenities go to waste: the pool with a central lava pit, the gaming center, a hot tub where bathers can play checkers.

Geiger and Everett had been discussing putting the house on the market for about three months. Everett said she has already shown the house, listed at $19.9-million, to two prospective buyers, and has two more signed up to see it.

"I don't think it's going to be too hard to sell, " she said.

Wow you guys are really hating on Matt. Who cares if he's married, he's taking care of his family and that is a role model especially for the NBA. It's his money which he earned whether or not you think he was any good. Good for you Matt!!!

do you all not have anything else to do, but complain about someone that you have never even met?? Matt is a wonderful person who is trying to have a better life for him and his family. Being jealous or judgemental will not change anything.
by Paul 06/28/07 06:35 PM
do people bash Hulk Hogan like this? Do they expect them to sell their house for 1/2 price?
by Bill 06/28/07 06:33 PM
has anyone looked at the stats from the 3 years preceding Matt's knee surgery. those who say he sucked obviously haven't. that is the wrong word. if their boss gave them a large, raise would they say no??
by vincent 06/28/07 05:38 PM
The only reason he has that place is that he is 7'2 It is not like he was any good.
by Jim 06/28/07 09:51 AM

by Keystone 06/27/07 05:50 PM
Whoohooo! I hope someone as nice as he buys it. There would be no Big Daddy stories in N. Pinellas without him. Don't Punish him for living his dreams, you wee bit jealous ones, go get your own piece of the pie.
by COSTA R 06/27/07 04:34 PM
How much did he make in the NBA??
by Dave 06/27/07 04:28 PM
So what if he gives to charities? A lot of us poor folks do also. This story just rubs the excesses of the rich into the faces of the not-so-rich. This foolishness doesn't belong in the Times. This isn't news. It is publicity.
by Gilbert 06/27/07 04:22 PM
Nobody's mentioning LeBron's 50k sq ft home he's bldg nor, are they slamming him for his out of wedlock child. The pt is this, who cares? I am glad he is providing a place for his children and thier mom, he could be a rich dead beat, but he is not.
by Ginabobina 06/27/07 04:08 PM
Maybe the Scientologists will buy it. They own Clearwater and Safety Harbor now. Tom C. and John T. would love it!
by Bimm 06/27/07 04:06 PM
Broke, Matt isn't smart enought to invest his money. Downsizing
by PerezShilton 06/27/07 04:03 PM
Hey, does Tom Cruise live in that house next to him?
by corndog 06/27/07 03:51 PM
Me things he ran out of money and his real estate biz opp didn't turn out. Can anyone say liquidation? What's with the Bison and llamas?
by Big Al 06/27/07 03:35 PM
Somebody had to be on crack to pay Geiger what the Sixers did. He took that franchise down single handedly. What a shame. That contract has to be one of the worst ever in NBA history.
by Sixer 06/27/07 03:22 PM
I think we paid Matt $1million per point.
by Jim 06/27/07 03:20 PM
Can I get the name of his agent? That guy must be good to get him big contract.
by Bill 06/27/07 02:59 PM
It's his money but he should be ashamed for being paid all that money and doing nothing in the NBA, a total bust. Thank god he's tall because he has no talent.
by Dru 06/27/07 02:51 PM
He should give money to charity after robbing the 76ers for years!
by Jo Jo 06/27/07 02:48 PM
Is the mini-horse for sale with the house? I want one of those so bad.
by ms 06/27/07 02:39 PM
What a waste of a story, with todays prices on gas, food, and taxes and insurance who wants to read a story about some silly rich boy who is not even married having babys. Great role model Matt. Convert the house into a Ronald McDonald house.
by Jose 06/27/07 02:19 PM
Hey Matt try acting normal, you don't need llama and all that crap. Noone cares that your 7'1" basketball is over.
by Chris 06/27/07 01:51 PM
I am glad I don't need to worry about it.
by Jack 06/27/07 01:24 PM
Everytime I go by there - I think - Too bad this guy couldn't of used his money in a more practical way.
by Tina 06/27/07 12:20 PM
Sickening
by Jo 06/27/07 12:07 PM
Hey, looks like a good place for Paris Hilton. Send her the specs on it.
by Native 06/27/07 11:58 AM
Wasn't this his subdivision of multi-million dollar estates for sports stars. Looks like it's going bust. Welcome to the real world of living in Florida after Bushs' train wreck!
by Jason 06/27/07 10:24 AM
Who cares what he wants to do. As long as he is doing it legally, it's his money to do whatever he wants with it.
