Controversy over how to handle protests has dogged preparations for the fifth annual St. Pete Pride, the largest celebration of gay pride in the Southeast.
The festival begins tonight with A Taste of Pride, starting at 6 p.m. at the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 3150 First Ave. S. Friday brings the Laughter in Paradise Comedy Festival to the USF St. Petersburg Campus Activities Center, Second Street and Sixth Avenue S, at 7:30 p.m. ($25).
The primary festivity, of course, is the Pride Promenade, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and goes from 30th Street to 21st Street on Central Avenue. The street festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Central Avenue between 21st and 28th streets. Free. (727) 388-9435; www.stpetepride.com.
