Golf Stories

Back in the '80s I belonged to a country club in Westerville, Ohio suburb of Columbus that nestled in with woods and condos, where I hold the record for the most windows broken on a hole. The eighth is a 120-yard par 3 that was in the process of getting some new condos and they had eight windows stacked up several yards to the left of the green (like out of bounds). Sure enough, I shanked my tee shot that line-drived right through all eight windows. My buddies and I laughed so hard we had quite a time finishing the hole. I would have liked to see the builder's expression on Monday. – Jim Hildebrand, Spring Hill In December of 1988 I spent a weekend working at a concession stand at the JC Penney Mixed Team tournament here in Pinellas County. One morning a caddie approached and I saw the name Larry Mize on the golf bag he was carrying. The previous year Mize had holed a miraculous (chip) shot at the Masters while Greg Norman was standing on the green waiting to try a long putt. Norman missed the putt and Mize ended up winning the Masters. You may remember that Mize frantically started jumping up and down flailing his arms after his shot went in. I asked his caddie if he said anything to Mize after the shot. He said that he walked over to Mize and said, "Stop jumping up and down! You look like an idiot and the other guy hasn't putted yet!" I loved it. – Scott Stewart, St. Petersburg Write us
