Had Simms known, who knows?
By RICK STROUD, Times staff writer
Published June 29, 2007
CRYSTAL RIVER - For more than three hours Thursday, Chris Simms was the Bucs' No. 1 quarterback again.
He had just led about a dozen kids from the Children's Home on an interactive tour of Kings Bay, swimming with manatees and free-diving the deep pools of Three Sisters Spring.
Whenever a snorkel was fumbled to the sandy bottom, Simms recovered it. If someone needed encouragement, he offered it. The large creatures are protected here, but it's also a place where Simms could seek refuge.
He stood on the shore with his wetsuit unzipped to his waist, revealing the 9-inch scar from surgery to remove his spleen last September. It's the only visible sign of why Simms' career in Tampa Bay might be endangered.
But there are other reasons. Simms is asked if he would've signed a two-year, $5-million extension with the Bucs last December had he known all that would transpire during this turbulent offseason?
"I don't know. I would've definitely re-evaluated the situation, " Simms said. ""That's an honest answer."
Instead, Simms is regaining the throwing mechanics he lost after developing some "bad habits" while unconsciously trying to protect his abdomen. And the 26-year-old lefty has an uphill battle to reclaim his job from 37-year-old Eagles free agent Jeff Garcia, who has been declared the leader in the clubhouse by coach Jon Gruden.
"But the bottom line is when it came time to re-sign and do that, (Garcia) wasn't here and I know I've loved it here up to this point and just can't see being anywhere else, " Simms said. "That's the whole reason my wife and I decided we wanted to stay here."
On sun splashed afternoons like Thursday, when Simms is the one stalking enormous mammals, it's easy to see why he stuck around.
Entering his fifth pro season, Simms still is popular in the Bucs locker room and in the community. His Wild Adventures initiative, which he started last year, combines his love of children, nature and animals.
Normally, the excursions include trips to the Lowry Park Zoo or Big Cat Rescue. But swimming with manatees? "It's unlike anything we've done so far, " Simms said. "That was cool that the kids could get out there, get into the water and get that close to a manatee."
Simms' guide on Thursday was Captain Traci Wood of Native Vacations, a former Michigan resident who vacationed in Crystal River in 1999. "I swam with a manatee and it was like a life-altering experience for me, " Wood said. She returned a few months later, got her captain's license and has been conducting manatee dives ever since.
The headwaters of Crystal River, fed by fresh water springs that produce 600 million gallons daily, are warmed to 72 degrees year round, attracting manatees who can't survive for long periods in water temperatures below 68 degrees.
In fact, Citrus County waters are the only place where hands-on interaction with the endangered manatees is permitted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
"Hey, I work with some pretty large mammals, " Simms said. "These may be smarter. But I shouldn't say that or I'll get in trouble with my offensive linemen."
Simms admits he never saw the trouble with losing his passing stroke coming.
"When you're just out there throwing by yourself, it's a little easier than when you've got live action and real routes being run and everything like that, " Simms said. "It's not something I saw happening, as far as the mechanical thing. But it's not something I'm really worried about, either. ...
"I was trying to guard my torso, so I was throwing all with my arm and just short-arming it. I put myself in a bad position to throw the football."
Worse yet, Simms may enter training camp behind Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski and perhaps Luke McCown, at least based on reduced reps in the offseason.
"It's tough. Of course I want to be out there and taking all the reps, " he said. "That's part of being an athlete and being a competitor. But the time will come. I know when July comes, nobody is going to be begging for more reps."
Simms smiled. He glanced at the boat that was shoving off for lunch at a nearby restaurant. A manatee surfaced nearby.
For the moment, neither seemed endangered.
"Oh, I see myself battling for No. 1, " Simms said. ""Without a doubt. No doubt."

Simms is the guy for the bucs. does anybody remember in 2005 when he took us to the playoffs? Bruce is garbage and Garcia is def. not the answer. Simms will continue to fight for the no.1 spot and if we r going to the playoffs it will be behind simms

Half of you guys are idiots. Plummer stinks. The fact that the Bucs even WANTED to trade for him is absurd. Garcia will fare well for a short period of time but get used to Simms. You obviously don't remember how well he did when Griese went down

Typical idiot football fans; Gruden won a superbowl when no one else could here. Completely resurrected Gannon and B. Johnson. The NFL is cyclical (free agency and salary cap), Gruden will win here again if the idiots don't run him off first.

Garcia is just a red herring. Gruden wants Plummer and is using Garcia to get him. Without Garcia, Plummer can hold out for a better deal from Allen since he knows the Bucs desparately need him. With Garcia, Plummer has to show up.

What a bunch of wacko's here that think Garcia is going to do any good here. He stunk it up in Detroit & Cleveland. Garcia is a Cancer in the locker room. When things go bad he blames everyone but himself. You blowhards deserve this egotistical jerk

Simms was drafted by McKay, not Gruden. Gruden has not developed one QB in his coaching history. Gradkowski is garbage, go look at the tapes. They should trade Simms for a 5th rounder and draft a QB after another horrible season (no off. talent).

I like Simms but he played so poorly in the beginning of last season that its his fault the job was lost. He definitely appeared to regress from the 2005 season. Now he will have to reprove himself and that is just the way the NFL works. Good luck.

I might throw up if I hear Gruden won with Dungy's team again. Less than half the starters returned when Gruden came. Dungy didn't win with Dungy's team, so there. We have one Super Bowl...Gruden's. He's a good coach, get over it.

What is the alternative - repeat the mistake of last year. We signed the best qb on the market in garcia. Unfortunately, brees wasn't available this year. Garcia gives us time to develop Bruce and another year to find a gem in free agency.

Tampa Bay, th most negative fans on the planet. Rooting for the Bucs to fall so Gruden will be fired? Truth of the matter, if we didn't sign Garcia, these same fans would be calling for our doom because of the lack of a veteran qb on the roster.

Who cares about Simms crying. The bottom line is the Bucs did him a favor by giving him 10m. Otherwise he'd be making the league minimum as a 3rd stringer in Arizona. He signed the deal b/c there is no market for young, unproven, oft-injured QBs.

Thank you, Bob for mentioning that fact about Garcia in Philly. It seems many Garcia fans are unaware of Westbrook's role in Garcia's "success."

Apparently no-one realizes, a) Gruden drafted Simms, so I guess that means he intended (and has done so) in giving him a chance to develop - which he hasn't, and b) Kiffin is the coach of this football team - he'll never get fired. Bucs will win w/D!

Jeff Garcia was behind a good OL in Philly. He wasn't asked to do much but hand off. People give him credit for Philly's success while McNabb was down, but the real hero was Westbrook.

ALL HIS (HC) EGGS IN ONE BASKET. Garcia will not make it to the end of the season. Grads will go in and get nuked. Gruden will press on with Grads. Fans will mutiny. No division win, so what happens next to remain competitive is anyone's guess.

Dear James the Fool,
Unless a QB has won a Super Bowl, or at the very least a few playoff games, he should never be surprised when a team brings in another QB to push for the starter's job. I've been a Simms supporter, but here he comes off whinny

100% agree w/Jim. Gruden never had any intention of giving Simms a glance. The Gruden-Garcia honeymoon w/be over soon enough. Hopefully they'll both be gone along w/Bruce Allen at the end of this season.

Simms has the one of the best deep balls in the league but is not suited for this team. However, he has the heart of a lion. None of you chumps writing can show the strength that he showed with a ruptured spleen! We should have won that game too!

The Bucs future is Bruce! Get used to it Simms is weak and Garcia is Garcia. I would bet a large sum of money that by the end of the season Gradkowski will be back!

It's a shame that the Bucs felt they needed Garcia. He has caused chaos since he was "picked up" - he doesn't WANT to be here, remember? Gruden needs to wake up (not at 3 a.m.) and make Simms the starter. End the chaos and confusion or ba-bye Gruden.

Maybe we should call up Scott Milanovich. Everyone wanted him as the starter some years back. Bucs fans always make the wrong call for QB. Simms will be a winner wherever he ends up, hopefully here.

Simms is a sorry QB and everyone knows it, even the Bucs. Its time to cut ties with Simms and focus on the future which will be Bruce Gradkowski.

seems like the bigger issue is the schizophrenic and shortsighted way this team has handled player/ personel since
Gruden arrived. See; Oakland 3 years after he left. He doesn't build things, he uses them and uses them up. Simms
is incidental
